  • A man found himself in a distressing situation after being unable to attend his best friend's wedding freely.
  • The man, who isn't poor but isn't a millionaire either, greatly considered skipping the wedding for a cut of his mom's inheritance.
  • His mom demanded he snub the wedding if he wanted to keep his place in her will.

A man had a difficult decision to make. He was torn between attending his best friend's wedding and keeping his place in his mom's will. It was a moral dilemma that made him question his priorities.

Despite having a stable job and living comfortably with his fiancée, the thought of inheriting millions of dollars made him wonder what their lives could be like.

It was a tough choice, but he knew that, ultimately, he had to make a decision. Either way, a person he dearly loved would get hurt.

The man's aging mom, 65, was in poor health. She was diabetic, obese, and had a history of poor heart conditions from smoking most of her life. To be very blunt about his mom's situation, the man said, "I'd be very surprised if she made it to another election cycle, four years."

His mom never liked his best friend but laid off the friendship after her son got engaged. The man's best friend had his big day all planned out. A small gathering would occur at a family friend's banquet hall, and his family would cater the celebration.

He deliberately mentioned his best friend getting married on a specific date, and his mom was livid, refusing to let him attend. But he set his foot down and declared he was not only going to be at the wedding but he was going to be his best friend's best man.

It was then that his mother flipped out. She refused to let her son attend and threatened to cut him off the will if he insisted.

"I've tried to get her to be reasonable but she isn't budging," the man said. The truth was, the mom was extremely homophobic her entire life.

She disapproved of her son's friendship with his best friend because of her views. She once even feared that her son was gay.

"If you go to that [expletive] wedding, we'll see how much you get," she threatened after her son insisted to attend. As she knew the wedding date, it would be impossible for the man to sneak out and pretend to be elsewhere.

The man was the first to admit that his mother was a bitter, hateful woman. He loved his best friend, but he also wanted his inheritance.

The man explained his situation to his best friend, thinking he would understand. He asked if he would consider a long engagement and wait until his mother passed on, but the suggestion made the best friend furious. "You're choosing your homophobic mom over me," his best friend blatantly told him.

The man's fiancée sided with his best friend on the issue. She firmly believed money wasn't supposed to be an issue and that his friendship with his best friend was worth saving.

However, the man was leaning towards choosing the money over the wedding. He knew his inheritance would give him a good 10+ years start towards early retirement.

The man posted his story online to gather thoughts about whether or not he was a bad person for choosing not to attend his gay best friend's wedding.

One person commented that even without the wedding at play, the man's mom made it very clear how she planned to control his life. "The game will be that she controls your every move, you comply and do not object; in exchange, you might be wealthy at some undetermined future time," the person wrote.

The user commented that whether his mom died the next day or in the next 25 years, she may or may not give the $5 million inheritance. "Are you willing to accept the terms of the game for an opportunity to inherit?" he asked.

What would you have done if you were in his position? Would you have disobeyed your mom and supported your best friend on his biggest day, or would you have sat it out for an inheritance?

Family inheritance is a sensitive topic for many people. Some rely on their loved ones to change the course of their lives, while others see it as an added benefit.

In another story, a mom stole her son's $150,000 inheritance behind his back, not knowing he would eventually find out. Click here to read all about it.
