Hotel stays make people feel luxurious — it has become a way to de-stress, relax, and wind down. Most hotels offer the same amenities, including complimentary coffee and tea, toiletries in the bathroom, or an ice bucket in the room.

While these are convenient and a standard treat for hotel guests, a former employee warned hotel-goers that not all freebies are meant to be enjoyed. She warned them not to use them at all because they were likely used by the guests before them and not cleaned thoroughly.

Angela Riihiluoma took to TikTok to reveal some unhygienic and appalling hotel practices that may be the norm in your local hotels. While you'd expect housekeepers to ready the room for the next guest, time constraints force them to do some time-cutting hacks.

With only approximately two hours between check-out and check-in, housekeepers don't have the leisure to go through every nook and cranny of the hotel rooms. Worse, some guests leave the rooms trashed, giving them added work.

Because of this, they compromise wherever they can. This means either reusing some freebies in the room or not using soap to wash the items inside the rooms.

Angela, a former hotel employee turned model, named her top three items that she suggests you DON'T use at your next stay. Read on to discover what they are:

3. The Coffee Machines

Some hotels offer coffee and tea sachets, and higher-end hotels offer pod-based espresso machines. However, some still offer the old-fashioned coffee maker. "Never ever EVER use the coffee machine," Angela warned.

She revealed that some guests use the coffee machine as a urinal, making it filthy and unclean. The next time you see a coffee machine inside a room, request coffee and tea sachets instead. That way, you can boil your water and dilute the sachet contents, knowing they aren't contaminated.

2. The Glasses in the Bathroom

Regardless of the hotel chain, there will always be glasses readily available in the mini bar and the bathroom. While they may look crystal clear, don't be deceived. Angela admitted that during the cleaning process, housekeepers don't have time to wash the glasses with dishwashing liquid.

Instead, they sometimes only wipe them down with glass cleaner, which explains why they look clean despite not being washed thoroughly. "They don't even wash them!," Angela said.

1. The Throw Pillows

If there's one thing you shouldn't touch in a hotel room, it's the throw pillows. They are not easy to clean, and when a room is passed from one guest to another, they are only fluffed to make them look neat.

Knowing they aren't cleaned after one guest checks out, you can only imagine what filth is in them. From drool to makeup stains, food stains, and more, these throw pillows are a big red flag. They can even pose a hazardous health threat if you think about it.

Yes, hotel rooms allow you to live a life of luxury even overnight, but they're far from new. Thousands of people have lived in the same room, and that's a lot to think about!

Next time you're at a hotel, leave space in your luggage for some cups, pillowcases, and anti-bacterial spray. After all, it's better to be safe than sorry!
