After a gay man lost touch with his family when he came out, he had to slowly rebuild his relationship with them when his baby was born. However, one Christmas, they overstepped their boundaries.

A Reddit user pleaded with others on the platform to tell him whether or not he was being ridiculous by kicking his family out of his house at one in the morning on Christmas Eve because they had crossed the line.

He knew what his family did was wrong, but he worried that he had been overdramatic about the situation and that something terrible could have happened to his family when they left his house.

The man was upset because his family had done something he specifically asked them not to do. So he turned to Reddit to ask other users if he was right to tell them to leave his and his husband's home.

Three years ago, when the COVID-19 pandemic gripped the world, a gay man shared his story on Reddit, hoping to get advice. He explained: "I lost touch with my family in my early 20s after coming out."

He built a life for himself, got married, and he and his husband welcomed a son. After the baby was born, he said, "They reached out after my son was born talking about joys of family and that they wanna be grandparents."

Although the man had lost touch with his family, he said, "We've been very slowly building our relationship." As they rebuilt their relationship, the man noticed that his family had no sense of boundaries, which made it difficult.

When the man made the Reddit post, his parents would only call or visit him to see and speak to his son and make snide remarks about the poster. However, one Christmas, the man put his foot down.

Two years after the man's son was born, amid the pandemic, his parents phoned and asked if they could come and stay in his three-bedroom house, as they lived five hours away, to spend Christmas with their grandson.

The man told his family they couldn't do that because of the pandemic. Still, they insisted, stating they would visit for just a day. But the man pointed out that a day would make no difference as they would still be in their home.

While the man thought they had settled the matter, he was surprised when his family members showed up at his doorstep unannounced at 1:00 a.m. on Christmas Eve.

There he was, staring at his parents, sister, brother, their spouses, and children, a total of nine people. Their plan was to stay over so their grandson could spend Christmas with his cousins and create memories.

Despite arriving in the wee hours, the man asked his family to leave. However, they insisted they had nowhere to go since it was heavily snowing, which affected visibility. Despite the family pleading with him, the man proceeded with the move. He shared:

"I kicked them out anyway I had to threaten to call the cops which I admit was dramatic."

The man's family made a fuss, making his husband and baby cry. When they finally left, his baby was up until five in the morning and didn't have any sleep.

He also felt guilty for kicking his family out, especially with young children wondering where they might have gone and if something dreadful had occurred. A thought crossed his mind whether he should have waited until morning before telling them to leave.

Reddit users came to the man's defense, saying his family had overstepped his boundaries and had "ridiculous" expectations. One person felt the man's family had used the children to manipulate him into feeling too bad to turn them away.

Another user said the man's family should have come up with other plans since he had turned them down twice. Another commenter advised the man to tell his parents that being grandparents was a privilege, and if they continued to overstep their boundaries, he would have no choice but to cut their relationship with his son off.

Many told the man he was not wrong for turning away his family, insisting his relatives were rude, and hadn't considered all the other variables like food and space, which would be an imposition to the man and his husband.

While all this man's family wanted to do was spend Christmas with their grandson, despite being told they couldn't, another grandmother ruined the holiday spirit by neglecting to give her granddaughter a gift and, in contrast, anticipating an extravagant present for herself.
