Ceslieanne Kamakawiwo'Ole Once Landed on Hawaii's Most Wanted List
Ceslieanne Kamakawiwo'ole was primarily recognized as the late singer Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's only daughter until the mid-2010s when she made headlines for breaking the law. The mother of five has since kept a low profile.
Ceslieanne Kamakawiwo'ole grew up shielded from the public eye by her parents. The world only learned more about her after her famous father, singer Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, died in the late 1990s.
Ceslieanne had a loving relationship with her dad. She was in her teens when he passed. She continued living privately from then onward; however, things appeared to go awry in 2016 when she landed on Hawaii's Most Wanted list.
Ceslieanne Kamakawiwo'ole Was Born to High School Sweethearts
Ceslieanne was born Ceslieanne Wehekealake'alekupuna Ah Lo Kamakawiwo'ole to Israel and Marlene Kamakawiwo'ole. Her parents met in high school when her mother was 14 and her dad was 16. Her father played the ukulele in a band, while her mother was a hula dancer.
The couple married on September 18, 1982, and welcomed Ceslieanne, also known as Wehe, soon after. Marlene quit dancing once she became Israel's wife and focused on caring for her husband and daughter. However, things were initially difficult as they struggled with finances.
Marlene and Israel also didn't get along sometimes, as Israel would spend almost every night out partying. When it was too much, Marlene would take Ceslieanne and stay at her mother's for months. Eventually, they started living separately after Israel moved out of their apartment.
Ceslieanne Kamakawiwo'ole Dove into Her Father's Ashes
Ceslieanne's father's close friend, Betty Stickney, described her as Israel's "constant companion," adding that "[She] seemed to know his every thought and anticipate each need." When Israel still lived with her and Marlene, they spent plenty of quality time together.
Israel would stay in Ceslieanne's room, talking and laughing with her, even when Marlene yelled that they were late for school or a show from the other side of the door. Israel would also tape-record Marlene when she chastised them, with him and Ceslieanne giggling in the background.
The artist died in June 1997 at 38 years old. Ceslieanne was 14, and her father was cremated — his ashes were scattered on the Pacific Ocean. Following her mother, Ceslieanne dove into the sea for a final swim with him, and more friends and family joined afterward.
Ceslieanne Kamakawiwo'ole Was Caught Driving a Stolen Vehicle
On February 26, 2015, Honolulu Police received reports of a stolen Mercedez SUV. The previous day, the owner had parked the vehicle on Ala Wai Boulevard in Honolulu, Hawaii, but it was gone when he returned to it the following morning.
It was spotted elsewhere later that afternoon, and upon setting up surveillance, police observed a woman getting into the SUV and driving off. They stopped it and arrested the driver, who was found to be Ceslieanne.
The following year, news broke that she was officially on Hawaii's Most Wanted list on a $20,000 warrant for not following the terms of HOPE probation, which is a "community supervision strategy for substance-abusing probationers who have long histories of drug use [...]."
Ceslieanne has since steered clear of the spotlight. Before her brush with the law, in 2010, she had helped raise funds for a friend's child who was battling leukemia.
It's unknown if she married, but she has five kids, two of whom sing and play the ukulele like their late grandfather, whose fans included Sean Connery, Adam Sandler, Jon Favreau, and Paul Simon (per his official bio).
