Missing Soldier Returns Home to Find His Wife Married – Story of the Day
Anna's husband, Scott, is a soldier who goes missing for six years and is declared dead. Anna is happily married to Ryan for three years until she finds out that Scott is alive with a good reason for not returning. Ryan and Scott are unwilling to let her go, but Anna is forced to pick one of them.
Anna was in the kitchen, preparing a big birthday dinner for Ryan, her husband, when she heard a knock on the door.
She had a soft smile, which grew as she heard the continuous and slightly impatient knocks on the door.
It must be him. He's back a little earlier than I expected, Anna thought as she wiped her hands and headed out of the kitchen.

She wasn't finished with dinner yet, but she had already packed and wrapped his birthday present, prepared to hand it to him the second he walked in.
"Ryan, do you really have to—" she began to say, swinging open the door with an excited look on her face, one that instantly stiffened the second she realized that Ryan, her husband, wasn't the person at the door.
In seconds, the rosy colors in her cheeks faded away, and her face became deathly pale as she stared at the person at the door.
Anna was convinced that standing before her was nothing but a ghost in human skin.
"Anna!" The man at the door whispered her name, trying to reach out to touch her, but Anna quickly stepped back, vigorously shaking her head.

On her face was a horrified expression, one she couldn't hide as her hands trembled in fear as she opened her mouth to speak.
"It's impossible! You've been dead for six years," said Anna, with no other explanation for why the man in front of her was there.
"Anna, you're my wife. If you don't believe I'm alive, who will?" Scott told Anna, wondering why, instead of being excited to see him after six years, she continued to look alarmed.
"I was unable to leave. I was caught and detained in the—" he began explaining when a more childlike voice interrupted him.
"Mom, Ryan isn't back yet? Who are you talking to?" Alice, Anna's thirteen-year-old daughter, asked, poking her head out the entrance at the same time to see who it was.

"Da-dad!" she screamed, her voice piercing through whatever daze Anna was still caught in as she watched Alice run forward and throw herself into her father's arms.
Alice successfully crushed any doubts Anna still had that Scott wasn't real.
"Alice! You've grown so big!" Scott shouted excitedly, holding her as tightly as she hugged him. He even tossed her a little in the air the way she liked him to.
"I knew you would come back even when everyone said you weren't going to," Alice whispered to him, grinning from ear to ear to Scott's delight.

"I'm glad that at least someone seems to be excited to see me," he said, stepping into the house past Anna, who instantly moved to stop him, but by then, it was already too late.
Scott had just entered the living room with Alice in his arms when he spotted the huge picture on the wall.
Instead of it being the one he was familiar with, of him and Anna on their wedding day, it was one of Anna with a completely different guy.
The next second, he lowered Alice to the ground, glowering at Anna as he fixed his gaze on her.
"How long did it take for you to replace me? A year?" He asked, raising his voice with a bitter look on his face.

"Or maybe it didn't even take that long for you to marry another man," he continued, his gaze sliding down to her fingers, where he noticed the different gold band on her hand.
"Maybe, just maybe, you were glad I was gone," Scott said, and by then, Anna could no longer keep quiet.
"Don't you dare say that to me!" She yelled at him, with tears in her eyes, forcing herself to remain calm.
Everything had been overwhelming from the very moment she laid eyes on Scott, her husband, who was declared missing and dead after a year of not being found.
He was a soldier deployed to another country and was due to return in days when he suddenly disappeared.

For Anna, the endless nights of waiting were too numerous to count, and even years after the funeral, she continued to hold on to hope he was somehow alive.
"You have no idea how much I mourned you! How many days I spent hoping that you'd return! Every knock, the sound of keys in the lock sent me running downstairs, wishing it was you."
"Yet you got married to someone else. How am I to believe you?"
"Six years! You were gone for six years, Scott; I had to move on for Alice's sake," Anna responded, with a harsh tone pointing at Alice, who continued to cling tightly to Scott's legs, refusing to leave.
Instead of trying to smoothen things out seeing how emotional Anna was, Scott didn't lower his voice and snapped right back.

"Do you know what kind of hell I was in? Then I come home expecting to see my family only to find out it's no longer mine."
Anna opened her mouth to speak again when she heard a familiar voice from the entrance of the house.
The situation was already pretty bad; the last thing she wanted was to watch it escalate. But unaware of what awaited him, Ryan spoke joyfully as he walked in.
"It's my birthday, but I still got roses for my beautiful wife," Ryan said, walking in through the door with a big bouquet of roses and a smile.
Ryan was happy, and from the smell that filled the house, he could tell that Anna was already whipping something up.

His mood soared, and for Ryan, everything was as it should be until he raised his head and came face to face with Anna, stunned to see the person beside her.
"You're dead!" was all he could think to say as he stared at Scott, whom he was somewhat familiar with.
He was a pharmacist and had one of the biggest shops in town.
Anna and Scott had visited his shop together countless times as a married couple, and it was only years after he was declared dead that he could make his move.
Seeing Scott standing beside Anna with Alice holding on to him was painful. The pain could be likened to a dagger being stabbed directly into his heart.

He and Anna had been married for three years and had been prepared to spend the rest of their lives together. Scott's presence in their home was a massive blow to him.
"You're dead! Why bother coming back after six years?" Ryan asked, speaking harshly to Scott without hiding his hatred towards him.
"Ryan!" Anna screamed at him, but Ryan refused to listen as he continued to speak.
"It's been six years, and he expects his family to still wait for him. Isn't that selfishness? If he cared, he should have come earlier," Ryan said, staring straight at Scott with a dark expression.
He was beyond pissed to see Scott stand there with an utterly calm look on his face, a little satisfied to see him scowl in a way that showed that his words got to him.

"You have no right to judge me. You have no idea what I had to endure to return to my family!" Scott glared at him, and Ryan glared back.
"Anna is my wife now, not yours. We've been married for three years," Ryan replied with a satisfied smirk.
"We're about to have a birthday party, so excuse me if I can't see you to the door," Ryan told him. Scott was stunned, picking up his backpack, not knowing what else to do.
The more time he spent there, the angrier he became at the thought that Anna was married to the man beside her.
"Scott, wait! We can talk about this," Anna implored, but Scott didn't even look at her as he concentrated on prying Alice off his legs.

"Please, Daddy, don't go! Are you leaving again?" she cried, and all he could do was convince her that he was coming back.
"Mummy, please, I want to go with Daddy," Alice yelled, but Anna shook her head to show that she couldn't as they all watched Scott leave the house.
"Alice, I can—" Ryan began to speak to her, trying to console her as tears streamed down her face, only for her to explode in anger.
"You're not my daddy! I want my daddy. I hate both of you!" she yelled, running upstairs to her room and making it clear that she wasn't coming down anytime soon.
She couldn't understand how her mum could allow her dad to leave, especially when they hadn't seen him for so long.

With tears in her eyes, she blamed Ryan, having heard enough from their conversation to know that he was partly responsible for why her father couldn't stay.
She liked him, but what she felt couldn't be compared to seeing her own father alive!
After Alice headed upstairs and Scott had left, only Anna and Ryan remained in the living room.
"Anna, I know you loved him, but I can assure you that—" Ryan began to say to Anna, who instantly shook her head and headed straight for the door.
"I need some time alone to think," Anna said, meaning every word as she walked out, heading towards the back of the house.

Ryan was left alone in the living room, staring at the portrait of his wedding picture with Anna on the wall.
Looking at it, he felt that no matter how hard he tried, his relationship would never again be the same.
Even Anna, who headed to the garden at the back of the house, had various thoughts running through her mind.
Her life was great, and everything was perfect until Scott showed up.
It didn't help that now that he was alive, all the love she had towards him and had buried deep in her heart was sprouting up one after the other.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: YouTube/(LoveBuster)
Scott is my first love...the first man I gave my heart to. If he hadn't been declared dead...would I even have befriended Ryan? she thought as she found a place to sit, trying to figure out what she was going to do.
I love Ryan; he has been really good to me, and to Alice. I know he loves me, but I also love Scott just as much, if not more.
Unlike Ryan, whom she had spent three years with before Scott went missing, they had been married for five years, not counting the three years she spent mourning him.
The more she thought about it, the harder it was for her to decide.
If she picked Scott, then Ryan, who had been a fantastic man and father to Alice through the years, would be extremely hurt.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: YouTube/(LoveBuster)
But if she picked Ryan, Scott, who had to be away from his family because of circumstances beyond his control, would feel even worse.
No matter how much Anna thought about it, she couldn't come to a solid conclusion, and an hour later, she had to go back inside the house.
Ryan, who hadn't moved from the living room nor taken off his work clothes, got up the second he saw her come In.
"I'm going to finish preparing the house before people start to arrive," Anna told him, seeing the worried expression on his face.
"I'll also make some cookies for Alice. She loves them," she continued, making it clear that she didn't want to talk about anything else.

For Ryan, the fact that she returned to the house and didn't follow Scott was enough for him.
We could still be a family; all I have to do is try hard enough, Ryan thought, moving closer to hug Anna, who hugged him back.
At that moment, she decided to stay with Ryan if nothing happened to disrupt their relationship.
Little did she know that Scott had no intention of abandoning his family.
As expected, guests and friends of Ryan and Anna began to arrive one after the other with gifts, and the party was going smoothly when an unexpected guest arrived.

Ryan almost lost it as he balled his fists together, ready to smash it into Scott's face if Anna didn't hold him back.
The tension between the two men was palpable and, stuck in the middle, Anna did her best to de-escalate the situation.
"Baby, Scott just got back; allow him to stay for the party. Alice will also be glad to see him," Anna calmly whispered in Ryan's ears, to Scott's dissatisfaction as he watched the interaction between them.
At first, Ryan's temper rose through the roof, but seeing the annoyed look on Scott's face, he smiled and settled down.
He turned towards Anna and pulled her closer before going ahead to kiss her.

Anna instinctively responded like she had for the past three years, with Scott glaring at Ryan in the background.
The only reason he thought to return was because Anna had begged him to wait, and he thought the least they could do was talk about the situation they found themselves in.
But seeing Anna kiss someone else felt like a blow to the gut as he turned around to leave.
If she's happy without me, then I should leave them, Scott thought, heading for the door when he heard a loud shout from the direction of the stairs.
"Daddy!" Alice shouted as she bounded down the stairs at shocking speeds, flinging herself into him like before.

"You're not a child anymore. You've grown much bigger," Scott teased her as he carried her gently in his arms.
The last time he saw her was six years ago when she was five, and now she was thirteen, and things had changed entirely from how he thought they would be.
Without saying another word to Scott, Anna dragged Ryan to meet their guests, indirectly permitting Scott to stay with Alice.
Ryan wasn't happy with this decision, but he understood why Anna wanted him to stay, as he wrapped his arms around her, choosing to focus instead on enjoying his birthday party.
Ryan considered Alice, his daughter but understood that she also needed the love of her biological father.

The party went smoothly, but although Anna stood beside him from the start to the end, Ryan could tell her mind was elsewhere.
Sometimes, he would even catch her glancing at Alice and Scott with a lost look in her eye that revealed how intensely she thought of the past.
Ryan continued to smile, pretending to enjoy his birthday party even though he couldn't wait for it to end.
Anna unconsciously made it clear that she would rather stand beside Scott than be beside him.
For a split second, he felt intense anger towards Scott as he watched him whisper to Alice with a fatherly expression on his face.

Scott gently patted Alice on the head, helping her with whatever she needed help with as she ate, utterly ignorant of Ryan's feelings towards him.
He's going to ruin everything. I wish he were dead! Ryan thought as he grabbed a glass and filled it to the brim.
He swallowed the contents in one gulp, pouring another the very next second, only for Anna to stop him from gulping it at the same pace.
"Take it easy. You still have to say goodbye to the guests," she warned him.

Ryan turned to look at her with a mocking smile at the edge of his lips, realizing that that was probably the only full sentence she had spoken to him throughout the entire party.
I wish you also had my child; maybe then you would love me more, Ryan thought, putting the drink down just as she asked him to.
"Poor thing, you look exhausted! The party will end soon," Anna said, stroking Ryan's back.
"It's fine. I'll be fine. Today is just a little different than I expected it to be," Ryan sighed, and Anna couldn't help but wrap her arms around him.

Quickly, she realized she had been completely distracted throughout the party and failed to give Ryan the attention the birthday boy deserved.
From that moment, Anna did her best to make him feel important and stood beside him, cheering for him as the huge cake she had ordered was cut and diced.
"A toast to myself and my wife, who made all these possible," Ryan suddenly shouted. Seeing Anna focus entirely on him put him in a much better mood.
"May our union last forever!" he yelled, fixing his gaze directly on Scott's face, whose attention was no longer on Alice, looking up to see Ryan kiss Anna as everyone drank on their behalf.
Scott burned with jealousy, even as he worked hard to keep a straight face.

He knew some of the people who came for the party, and although they knew him, he could feel the judging look they sent his way.
He knew that most of them probably felt he had no right to return after six years and invade Anna's already blissful life, but Scott didn't care.
I didn't ask to be detained for six years. All I want is my family back.
Soon, the party ended, and the guests began to leave one after the other, with Scott taking longer to say goodbye to Alice than Ryan could bear to accommodate.
"You'll see him again, Alice," Ryan told Alice, who seemed unwilling to leave Scott.

Seeing this, Anna offered to carry her upstairs and tuck her in for the night, which she finally agreed to.
"I'll call you," Anna whispered to Scott as she left, walking upstairs to tuck Alice in.
She didn't know what she would say to Scott, but she knew they needed to have a serious conversation moving forward.
Right before she left, she sent a mild look at Ryan, trying to tell him to be nice to Scott as he sent him off, satisfied to see Ryan nod his head before she left.
Unknown to her, Ryan had no intention of pretending to be nice.

Scott was tall, and Ryan had a similar stature, so that standing a few feet apart, neither of them appeared shorter than the other.
"I don't want you to ever come here again," Ryan heavily warned him.
He didn’t care about the army uniform Scott still wore or the bulging muscles he could see around his arm, sure that Scott couldn't touch him.
If he did, then it would only make things easier for me, Ryan thought, imagining how easy it would be to spread the news of a soldier beating up a respectable civilian.
"Really? You don't want me to come to my house? It's in my name," Scott responded with a smirk that showed just how smug he was to say it.
"I get that for three years you've been looking after my family, and I thank you, but now I'm back," Scott told him, still very annoyed as he recalled seeing Ryan kissing Anna.

"Anna is my wife, and Alice is my biological daughter; it would be best if you—"
"Look, man. Nothing changes the fact that you're legally dead, okay? Now, please leave. And next time, I expect us to meet in the court of law!" Ryan told him, slamming the door in his face the second he was done speaking.
Ryan was livid as he locked the door and headed up the stairs. If he could, he would have moved Anna and Alice out of the house at that very moment.
"Are you okay?" Anna carefully asked him as they settled down for the night.
Ryan kept shifting and moving, making it impossible for her to sleep. They slept on the same bed, but Anna couldn't help but put a little distance between them.
She was just about to lie back down on the bed after not getting a responsefrom Ryan when she unexpectedly heard him speak, asking her a question in return.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
"Do you love me?" she heard him ask, turning to face him with a stunned expression.
"Of course I do; why would you ever think I didn't?" she instantly responded.
"What about Scott? Do you love him?" Ryan asked again, but this time, Anna didn't instantly respond.
"Ryan, Scott is my first husband and the father of—" she began to explain, but Ryan didn't allow her to finish.
"What I truly want to know is, between the two of us, who do you love more?" he asked, feeling his heart pound twice as hard the second the words came out of his mouth.

Somehow, deep down, he already knew the answer, but he desperately hoped to hear something different from Anna, something that would convince him that he was wrong and Scott wasn't a threat to their marriage.
But seconds passed without Anna giving a concrete answer or any answer at all. Instead, she just stared at him with all the anxiety she felt strewn across her face.
"I-I don't know," Anna stuttered when she finally replied, but by then, Ryan had already turned his back to her.
You're a terrible liar, he thought, finding it impossible to fall asleep even hours later.
He could hear Anna breathing beside him and turned back around to stare at her sleeping face.
As long as a part of your heart belongs to me, I have no intention of letting you go, he declared silently, having given up on sleep.
The next day came soon enough, and Ryan got ready for work.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
He had many things planned for the day, as he intended on finding a house for them to move to.
Apart from that, he planned on coming back early from work and taking Anna out, hoping to discuss Scott's visitation schedule to see Alice.
"Have a good day," Anna leaned in to kiss him on the cheek, but Ryan moved to kiss her lips instead.
He noticed that she had also been getting more distant from him, and it was also something he decided to fix as he walked toward Alice to hug her.
"Bye, Alice."
"Bye, Daddy," Alice said, hugging him in return.

At first, Alice had called him Ryan, but after a while, she began thinking of him as a second daddy, considering how much she enjoyed having him around.
Ryan soon left, and a few hours later, Alice also went out to play with her friends, leaving Anna alone in the house.
Although she had slept well, her mind was in constant turmoil. She had informed Scott that she would call him, but she still had no idea what to say.
Of course, she loved Scott more, but the thought of leaving Ryan, who stood by her, helping her through the most challenging three years of her life, wasn't something she could do.
She was still ruminating over the decision when she heard a soft knock on the door.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
At first, she thought she imagined it until she heard a heavier knock on the door, one that continued until she got up and moved to open the door.
Anna was surprised to see the last person she expected to see standing behind it.
"Scott!" she called out, surprised to see him standing there with a bouquet of her favorite flowers in her hands.
"What are you doing here?" she asked as she watched him give the flowers to her.
"Aren't you going to ask me to come in?" Scott asked with an amused look, glad to see her stare at him the way he hoped she would.

He had gone to extra lengths to clean up compared to his slightly shaggy appearance the day before.
His hair had been cut and his beard trimmed. He even bought and wore a new suit, hoping it would somehow help remind Anna of why she married him in the first place.
"Of course, come in," Anna said, inviting him in and leading him to sit in the living room, feeling a little anxious to see how Scott looked around the house they had both lived in.
"What would you like? Tea, coffee, or would you like me—" she anxiously asked, only to be cut off in the middle by Scott, who chose to remain standing.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
He had chosen that exact time for a reason, with hopes that he would get some time alone with Anna without Ryan being around.
He didn't have enough time to beat around the bush.
"Anna, stop. You know exactly why I'm here. You're my wife. The fact that I'm alive is already enough to annul your marriage with Ryan," Scott told Anna, digging into his pockets to bring out their marriage certificate.
It was rumpled at the edges and seemed to have seen better days, but Anna still took it from him with a smile as she recalled just how happy she had been with Scott.
She was so in love with him that even though he was a soldier who would spend his time away from home rather than with her, she cried tears of joy the second he proposed.

"We can have all we had and more. I don't want to live without you, Anna," Scott said, closing the gap between them as he walked closer to her.
"I don't want to see Alice on weekends; I want to kiss her goodnight every day."
"I want to kiss you every day," he said, whispering the last part as he leaned down, his face mere inches from hers.
"I love you, and I know you love me, Anna," he softly said, closing the gap between their lips, half waiting for her to move or push him away.
Scott was surprised but even more excited as he felt her kiss him as passionately as he kissed her.

"What does this mean?" he asked the second their lips parted ways, with a slightly anxious look on his face.
"I need to know that you're my wife and only mine," he said, staring into her eyes with such determination and affection that Anna, who had been swept by the romantic moment between them, couldn't say no.
With a big smile, she leaned closer to and kissed him this time, feeling extremely happy to be in his arms again after so long.
They spent a while in each other's arms, kissing and whispering sweet nothings, trying to make up for the past six years they'd been apart.
Lost in the moment, neither of them was aware of the soft knock on the door, right until it swung open, and Ryan walked in.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
Scott was the first to hear the sound of footsteps by the entrance, but instead of ending the kiss, he continued kissing Anna just as fervently as before.
By the time Anna realized they were no longer alone and managed to pull herself away from Scott, it was already too late.
She turned around to see Ryan standing behind her with a hurt look on his face. He looked distraught, and Anna couldn't bring herself to say a word, looking down with a guilty expression.
"Aren't you going to say anything? The least I deserve is an explanation, seeing how easy it is for you to cheat on your husband," Ryan said to her, completely ignoring Scott's presence."
"Ryan, I'm sorry, I'm really—"
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
"She has nothing to be sorry for. I'm her husband, and the fact that I'm alive means your marriage is no longer legal," Scott interrupted, moving to stand beside her and grasping her hand in his.
Ryan watched, expecting Anna to pull away, only to feel his heart shatter to a million pieces when she didn't.
"I don't care!" Ryan announced with a stubborn expression as he turned to speak to Scott. "Even if that's true, the marriage will be legal once she divorces you."
"Are you delusional!" Scott suddenly yelled, unable to keep his temper in check any longer.

The fact that Ryan cared for his family for so many years was the only reason he had been speaking gently to him.
However, watching him stubbornly refuse to back down annoyed him beyond words.
He opened his mouth, about to say more, only to stop, when he felt Anna's tight grip around his hands and heard her speak.
"Ryan, Scott, please. Let's all sit down and talk things out like adults," Anna pleaded, with Ryan shaking his head even before she was done.
"What do you expect me to talk about while you're holding his hand?" Ryan asked, picking up the briefcase he had dropped on the ground and walking out of the house.

"Ryan, wait!" Anna called out after him, only to watch him walk ever faster as he left.
"Don't bother. He needs some time to accept that things have changed," Scott told Anna, pulling her to his chest and holding her there.
He was happy to have Anna back.
When he got back and saw her married to Ryan, he felt worse than all the years he had been detained and hadn't been able to reach her.
Even though she was within his reach, the thought of losing Alice again wasn't a risk he was willing to take.

I don't know what I would have done if you told me no and refused to leave Ryan, Scott thought to himself, hugging Anna and unwilling to let her go.
At that moment, he realized that he needed to be careful since if Ryan truly cared for Anna as much as he did, then there would be no lengths he wouldn't go to have her.
Ryan felt like a withered leaf, tossed around by the wind as he left the house he had lived in for three years and created many beautiful memories.
I should never have agreed to live there for Alice's sake, if I had known. I wish I had gotten a house with big, mighty gates so that even if he came back, he wouldn't have been able to see them.
Different thoughts ran through Ryan's mind as he made his way to the bar, intent on drinking all his sorrows away.

By the fourth glass, he could already feel a slight buzz in his head and decided to stop.
"Woman trouble, right?" Sam, the bartender, asked with a knowing smile on his face.
Ryan nodded with hunched shoulders, not knowing what else to say.
In the blink of an eye, he had lost the family he thought he had, and it wasn't even because of something he did.
"I made a mistake," Ryan told the bartender with heavy eyes.

If I hadn't married her then, I wouldn't be discarded in such a way, Ryan thought, unable to pretend that he wasn't heartbroken about the way things were.
Not only was he affected, he felt like his very soul was shattered and would never heal again.
"So what? If you made a mistake, then you should go back and fix it. You should learn to fight for love," Sam told him, cheering him on as best as he could as he moved to fill his glass.
In his mind, all he knew was that the longer they talked, the more the customer in front of him would drink, and the more money he would make at the end of the day.
"By tomorrow morning, when you're sober, head over to her place and confess your undying love to her on your knees," the bartender continued, seeing the need to do so as the customer in front of him kept shaking his head.

"Trust me, I know exactly how it—," but before the bartender could say more, Ryan was already on his feet, dropping the money he owed on the counter and heading out to the disappointment of Sam, who instantly moved to the next customer at the counter.
"You've been drinking for a while now; from the look on your face, I'm guessing it has something to do with your current partner," Sam said, pouring another drink with an empathetic look on his face.
With how easily men bottled their feelings, more than half of the time, Sam was usually right.
Tipsy but nowhere near drunk, Ryan headed back home, not particularly surprised to see Alice open the door.

He figured Anna and Scott were busy in the room making up for lost time.
Without wasting time, he packed as much stuff as he could into his backpack, picking up a gallon of fuel before making his way to Alice.
"I'll miss you," he told Alice, placing the gallon of fuel on the ground as he hugged her goodbye.
"When are you coming back?" Alice innocently asked, only to hear her mum's scream as she dashed forward to separate her from Ryan.
The smell of booze coming off Ryan was significant, and the gallon of fuel by his feet didn't in any way endear him to Anna at that moment.

"I-I see the both of you have fully gotten together. It was expected," Ryan slowly said, picking up the open gallon and spilling a little on the ground with how tipsy he felt.
"Ryan, don't do this; setting the house on fire isn't going to solve anything," Anna pleaded as Scott moved forward, protecting Alice behind him.
Scott was prepared to run forward and grab the gallon from Ryan's hands the second he was about to use it.
"What?" Ryan asked, a confused expression on his face. "Burn the house down?"
"I'm leaving like you wanted and heading to my cabin, so I need the fuel. I'll come back and pick up the rest of my things later," Ryan explained, about to leave, only to see Anna move to block his way.

"Stay the night. You're drunk, and you can't—"
"I'm leaving Anna. I love you, so I'm leaving because being with Scott will make you happier than being with me."
"Ryan," Anna called his name, trying to convince him, but he stepped to the side and continued walking towards the door.
Just as he was about to turn the door handle and leave, he turned around, looking towards Scott this time.
"You better take care of them," he warned, with a serious look on his face, but this time around, Scott nodded instead of getting angry at Ryan's behavior.

"I will," he responded, watching Ryan leave seconds later.
Anna had a very somber expression on her face minutes later as she continued staring at the door, unwilling to look away until Scott moved to stand beside her.
"I will never leave you again. And I'm going to make you the happiest woman in the world," Scott promised her.
