Nurse with Desire to Be a Mom Connects with Baby in NICU Immediately — She Receives Offer to Adopt the Newborn
Mackenzie Denich, a NICU nurse, longed to be a mother. She shared a special connection with a baby girl born with several medical conditions. She finally got to legally adopt her daughter, Athena, and could not be more proud to be her mom.
Mackenzie Denich, a NICU nurse at Children's Nebraska, had always wanted to be a mother. As a nurse, she worked with many children daily, but she made a special connection with one baby girl.
Denich's mother had met a couple at church whose daughter was pregnant in July 2021. They explained that their daughter could not care for the child. And while they loved being grandparents, they could not become full-time parents again.
Without any hesitation, Denich's mother said, "Mackenzie will take her." Denich immediately envisioned a life with a baby, making lists of everything she would need before the child arrived.
However, the nurse realized that the parents had not even agreed or asked her how she felt about taking in their baby. She remembered thinking, "Why would a family choose a single mom who doesn't have other kids? So, I just put it out of my mind."
On October 11, 2021, the newborn baby girl named Athena was admitted into the Children's Nebraska hospital, and that also happened to be the day that Denich was working. It was just a few hours after Athena was born, and from the moment the nurse laid eyes on her, she fell in love.
The baby was born with many medical complications. But the first thing that came to Denich's mind was how much she wanted to care for this baby. "She needs me," she said. The following day, the question she had been anticipating finally came through.
Athena's biological grandmother asked her if she would still like to adopt Athena, and Denich instantaneously said yes. Dr. James Vargo, a craniofacial and pediatric plastic surgeon at Children's Nebraska, recognized the undeniable connection between the nurse and the little girl. "It was one of those things that was meant to be," he said.
Denich eventually got to take her baby home after three weeks. Athena had to go through surgery to fix her cleft lip and palate along with her disconnected esophagus.
Fortunately, Denich has all the experience to take care of children with complex conditions. She also came from a family of nurses. Her two brothers and two sisters-in-law are all nurses and are more than willing to help look after Athena.
The mother expressed how her family was more than equipped and how she trusted everyone with her. July 14, 2023, was the day that Denich finally got to adopt Athena legally. She had a crowd of 50 friends and family cheering her on.
The nurse admitted that adoption can come with both sad and happy emotions; however, she was grateful that something amazing came out of a traumatic event.
In the future, she hopes to be the best mother to Athena, whether that is her medical journey or protecting her heart. But even before adopting her daughter, she was aware of the difficult emotions of having Athena separated from her biological mother.
Nonetheless, she was determined to give her baby all the love. "I'm so thankful that she is here. I tell her every day, 'I'm so happy to be your mom.'" she expressed. Denich has not revealed Athena's specific diagnosis; even when people ask, she chooses not to disclose it because she wants people to be accepted for their differences.
But in her two years of living, it was revealed that Athena had a team of 15 specialists helping her and has gone through six surgeries. Aside from her medical conditions, she's a happy toddler who loves coloring, puppies, and zoo visits.
Here is a story about a couple who adopted a six-year-old but were shocked to find him nursing a baby in his room.
