Mom Skips Christmas Presents for Her Daughter, Opts for Holiday Getaway Instead

People usually visit family or buy each other gifts during the festive season. However, one woman wanted to do things differently for her toddler and chose not to buy the little girl any gifts but to give her a special present.

With the festive season comes many expectations, but some of the main ones are that things must be perfect and money must be spent on gifts. However, one social media user shared her outlook on celebrating Christmas.

On December 13, 2023, Matilda "Tilly" Hannah took to her TikTok account to show how her days were going as she entered the festive season and the twelve days before Christmas. The social media user started her recording by explaining that she hadn't gotten her one-year-old daughter, Penelope, a single gift for Christmas this year.

Instead, Matilda was celebrating Vlogmas, a trend and holiday tradition where social media users post a video daily in December during the run-up to Christmas Day. Most of the clips have seasonal themes. The mother of one hadn't expected to be into Vlogmas but then had an epiphany as she explained:

"Realized that Christmas doesn't have to look the same, and everyone's different versions is (sic) special in their own way."

Besides doing the whole vlogging thing, Matilda and her family had decided to do something different for their daughter. The social media user explained what they'd opted for and why they'd made that decision.

How Did Matilda Decide to Celebrate Christmas?

According to her Instagram account, Matilda - 24 years old - shared that she and her partner, Ben, decided to take Penelope away on a trip instead of buying her presents. The idea behind the plan was that they'd get to spend quality time as a family.

For some background, Matilda explained that she was primarily a sole parent because her partner worked away from home for 80% of the year. Her Vlogmas showed off her day-to-day life and what she did with her daughter while they were alone.

However, the mother-daughter pair was excited when Matilda's partner returned home. The Tiktoker felt having your family with you and spending time together was what Christmas was about. Her Twelve Days of Christmas vlog would show how the holidays were about balancing and juggling things along with the festivities.

Penelope's mother thought there was pressure during that time of the year for things to be "picture-perfect and magical," but the truth was that it wasn't always that way. There was everyday life for her that included looking after their toddler while running the house. Matilda later gave a video update on how their vacation was going.

Matilda and Her Family's First Holiday Vacation Day during the Festive Season

Days before Christmas Day, Matilda returned to TikTok with an update on their vacation. She confessed that the trip wouldn't have been possible without their grandparents. Ben's brother surprised their father by coming for the trip to India.

Upon their arrival at the hotel, Penelope's grandparents immediately offered to take her, and she slept. Matilda and Ben got to nap for around one to two hours before unpacking and meeting the rest of the people for lunch.

Her vlog showed off the sights in the area, including the streets and restaurants. Ben was captured cradling little Penelope, who was luckily eating, drinking, and going to the toilet normally despite all the heat and their completely different environment.

The little girl even enjoyed the swimming pool and made all the months of swimming lessons worth it for Matilda. Ben's daughter could nap again later, and her parents let her sleep in because she was exhausted.

The little girl could barely eat dinner at the restaurant, and her mother struggled to get her to gel with their current timezone. Penelope only slept for three hours on the plane to India. People at the restaurant noticed how utterly exhausted the child was, and the waiter even commented about her having mashed potatoes on her face, with Matilda admitting:

"I think I was a bit tired too."

To get through their first day of vacation, Matilda ended up swapping her daughter with Ben, whose father later took the child from him so that he and his girlfriend could have a hot meal. The day concluded with the couple eating a hot meal before heading to bed for an early night.
