The Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University (Alabama A&M University) has retracted a statement initially announcing the death of linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr., clarifying that the 20-year-old remains alive and hospitalized in Birmingham.

The mistaken announcement, reportedly based on misinformation from an immediate family member, was issued on the evening of Tuesday, November 26. The university apologized for the error and expressed relief over Burnett's ongoing recovery.

Burnett sustained a severe head injury during the Magic City Classic in October. The incident occurred during an Alabama A&M kickoff play when he was involved in a pileup while attempting to stop the runner. He was carried off the field on a stretcher, giving a thumbs-up to the crowd as he exited.

Following the game, Burnett's condition deteriorated. According to the athlete's sister, Dominece James, on a GoFundMe page, he suffered multiple brain bleeds and swelling, which required emergency medical intervention. Doctors performed a craniotomy to relieve the pressure, a last-resort measure to save his life.

"He needs and is going to need a lot of care, and all of his family live out of state from where he is located, and they also need to be able to have housing to be there to support and help him in this journey," the page stated.

As of this writing, the GoFundMe campaign has raised over $38,130 to assist with medical expenses. The page, which includes updates on his recovery, noted that Burnett recently celebrated his 20th birthday in October.

Burnett's family has expressed uncertainty about his future but emphasized the importance of continued prayers, support, and donations to assist with his recovery and provide him the best chance at survival.

In a revised statement, Alabama A&M Athletics expressed regret over the earlier misinformation while celebrating the news of Burnett's stability. "Upon hearing from a representative from UAB hospital this afternoon, we learned that he remains alive," the department stated. "We hold complete joy in knowing that Medrick remains in stable condition."

Burnett, a redshirt freshman who transferred to Alabama A&M from Grambling State, played in seven games this season. His injury has drawn significant support from the university and the community.

Head Coach Connell Maynor and other university officials have actively supported Burnett and his family throughout his hospitalization, with staff members visiting him in the hospital to offer assistance and encouragement.

While health privacy laws have limited the details shared about Burnett's recovery, his family has expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support. His mother, Denise Burnett, specifically thanked the community and indicated that the family plans to release a detailed statement when they feel ready.

Burnett's recovery remains uncertain, but the GoFundMe campaign continues to serve as a key resource for those wishing to support his ongoing care.
