A Former Nurse Turned Her Passion for Flipping Old Furniture Into a Business Now Earning Thousands of Dollars

A single $20 purchase and a fresh coat of paint were enough to change the course of a 25-year career. What began as a home improvement hobby soon outpaced a steady paycheck, and it reshaped how one family earns, saves, and spends time together.

Cami Lane, 48, spent 25 years as a registered nurse and never imagined working in any other field. Then, in her late 40s, she bought a pair of secondhand nightstands for $20, gave them a fresh coat of paint and added new hardware, and sold them for $275.

That one sale showed her she could make money doing something she loved, and it set a much bigger change in motion. However, her story starts well before those nightstands.

The career change began about two and a half years ago, after five years of DIY and renovation projects that she shared on Instagram and TikTok. Learning to use power tools had given her the confidence to take on work she once would have hired out.

Then her daughter asked her to refinish a dresser for a nursery. While researching furniture restoration, Lane noticed other flippers posting their earnings and began to wonder if she could do the same.

After the nightstands, she settled into refinishing roughly one piece a week while still working as a nurse. Several months of steady sales convinced her the business could last, and once her furniture earnings began to top her nursing pay, she took the leap.

What the Business Earns

Lane set a goal of $6,000 in monthly profit for about 20 hours of work a week, or four or five refinished pieces. Since leaving nursing, she said she had averaged around $6,500 a month. Her best month came in August 2025, when she brought in about $8,400.

Those profit figures account for the cost of furniture, supplies, and equipment but exclude gas and taxes. Working from her family's three-car garage and selling mostly on Facebook Marketplace, the 48-year-old said she had never had a month in which she broke even or lost money.

How the Work Gets Done

The job takes far more than paint. Lane starts by hunting for well-made pieces that need a modern finish rather than heavy repairs. At home, she cleans, sands, primes, and paints each one, makes any needed repairs, and swaps the hardware before photographing and listing it.

Finding furniture and arranging transportation take the most time, followed by messaging buyers and setting up pickups or deliveries. To use her hours well, she works on several pieces at once and finishes the same step on all of them before moving on.

More Than Furniture

The income also helped her family when her husband took a pay cut. His pay later recovered, and the extra earnings now go toward savings and personal financial goals, while her flexible schedule leaves more time with her children and grandchildren.

In February 2026, Lane began treating content creation as a serious part of the business and eventually produced a $37 furniture-flipping guide alongside her social media work and brand partnerships.

Those income streams let her cut refinishing to about eight to ten hours a week, though making content took more time than refinishing furniture itself. Meanwhile, her husband, who once helped prep pieces, mainly assists with pickups and deliveries when his schedule allows.

"For now, I love choosing how much I work and when, which gives me flexibility to be available for my children and grandchildren," Lane shared.
