The New York Police Department (NYPD) has released two photos of the suspect in the murder of the health insurance executive.

As police continue their investigation, photos of the masked suspect who tragically shot and killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, have sparked significant online discussion.

The photos released by the NYPD show the individual, presumed to be male, wearing a gray hoodie pulled low over their face, obscuring key facial features. He paired this with a black backpack. In one image, the suspect appears serious, adding an air of mystery.

In contrast, the second photo captures them flashing a wide, seemingly cheerful smile. This unexpected expression sparked widespread speculation online, with many commenting that the smile and demeanor led them to believe the suspect might be female.

Many users speculated about the individual's identity, with one asking bluntly, "So a female killed this guy?" Another chimed in, "I see a white woman, not a handsome man." This sentiment was echoed repeatedly, "That's a woman," while another user concurred, "I see what appears to be five o'clock shadow on the chi. The eyes look female."

An individual simply declared, "Looks like a woman to me 😏." Some users shared more detailed thoughts. "It looks like a woman, or very feminine man🧐," one person observed. They continued, "I hope it wasn't some secret affair... I was thinking denial of insurance or meds to him or someone he knows, but this picture smiling—I'm not sure, smh😞."

Others stuck to the idea that the suspect wasn't male. "He looks like her," one commented, while another noted, "That bottom picture looks like a female." Therefore, the prevailing opinion many shared was that the suspect, "Looks like a woman."

The internet continues to buzz as people debate the suspect's appearance and possible motives. The NYPD has urged anyone with information to help them in their ongoing investigation. They wrote, "If you have any information about this case, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). There is a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction."

Furthermore, on the day of Brian Thompson's death, NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch shared details about the tragic incident during a media briefing. Tisch reportedly said the 50-year-old executive was walking to UnitedHealthcare's investor conference when an unknown gunman approached from behind and fired multiple rounds, striking him in the back and calf.

Thompson was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai West Hospital.

As reported by NBC, police described it as a "premeditated, preplanned targeted attack."

Surveillance footage, shared by NBC, showed the gunman waiting several minutes before shooting Thompson, who wore a blue suit.

The attacker followed him as he fell and continued firing.

Police said the gun appeared to jam but was cleared before the shooter resumed firing.

Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said officers recovered three live 9 mm rounds, three discharged shell casings, and a cell phone near the scene.

Investigators believe the gunman used a firearm equipped with a silencer.

The suspect fled on foot, switched to a rental bike, and was last seen entering Central Park.

Police described the suspect as wearing a black hoodie and pants and carrying a gray backpack.

Police believe that Thompson was deliberately targeted, though the motive remains unclear.

Adding to the uncertainty, Thompson's wife, Paulette, recalled that her husband had received threats.

"Basically, I don't know, a lack of coverage? I don't know details. I just know that he said there were some people that had been threatening him," she said.

He later held several senior roles, including Chief Financial Officer for multiple divisions, showcasing his versatility and leadership within the organization.

Before joining UnitedHealth Group, Thompson spent nearly seven years at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) in various roles.

As Manager of Transaction Advisory Services from 2002 to 2004, he conducted due diligence for corporate, venture capital, and private equity clients in mergers and acquisitions across industries like insurance, automotive, telecommunications, and manufacturing, handling both domestic and international deals.

Earlier at PwC, Thompson worked as an Audit Manager from 1997 to 2002, overseeing audits for large international companies and handling SEC filings, debt offerings, and regulatory audits.

Thompson's academic excellence also stood out.

A graduate of the University of Iowa, he earned valedictorian honors in 1997, receiving the Delta Sigma Pi Scholarship Key for achieving the highest GPA.

He was also recognized as a scholar for Carver, State of Iowa, and Faculty, among other accolades.
