His wife confirmed the sad news of his passing through his Instagram account, and attention has since turned to the last post Campbell himself ever published — a candid, characteristically warm update now carrying a weight he could not have intended at the time.

Michael Campbell, the Northern Irish actor known to "Game of Thrones" audiences worldwide, passed away at the Northern Ireland Hospice on 8 April 2026. He was 35.

His wife, Naomi Sheehan, broke the news through his Instagram account that same day, alongside a photograph taken on their wedding day — Campbell striding along a sun-dappled path in a dark suit and orange tie as Sheehan walked beside him in her wedding gown.

Sheehan's tribute was measured in its grief and generous in its love. "Last night, Mick sadly passed away in the Northern Ireland Hospice," she wrote.

"He was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease 1st February 2023. He was admitted 10 days ago and was cared for by the incredible team there. He passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends. Words can't describe how broken-hearted we are," she continued.

Sheehan further wrote of the man her husband had always been, not only in the years since his diagnosis but long before any of it, sharing:

"It's been said more than once that Mick was an inspiration to everyone who was privileged enough to come into contact with him, not just in the past few years during his illness but in every day of his life. He lived a life as full as any human can live. Joy, abundance of spirit, infectious laughter."

The tribute ended with a quote Campbell had held close, taken from the Irish playwright Brendan Behan, "The most important things to do in the world are to get something to eat, something to drink and somebody to love you."

Sheehan signed off with three words that said the rest. "So, don't overthink it," she shared. "Eat. Drink. Love."

His neurologist had also given him a prognosis that brought everything into sharper focus.

As news of Campbell's death spread, tributes quickly flooded social media, with many reflecting on both his illness and the profound loss of a life cut short. One commenter wrote, "RIP what a horrible illness such a shame and so young prayers to the family [sic]."

Another said, "So sad, a young man taken in his prime by a cruel disease." A third added, "35? Omg so young, a whole life ahead. May he rest in the peaceful heaven."

The Last Post He Ever Shared

Two months before his passing, on 6 February 2026, Campbell published what would be his final Instagram update. He opened with the words, "3 years of having mnd. Still [expletive] craic."

What followed was one of the most candid health updates he had ever shared. He and Sheehan had spent more than a week in hospital, meeting with doctors, undergoing tests, and weighing up the implications of a tracheostomy. After all of it, he had reached a decision.

"In short I'm not going ahead with the tracheostomy," he wrote, explaining that he had been told it would likely be six to 12 months before he could return home due to a shortage of staffing resources. The actor named, without bitterness, everyone who had done their utmost on his behalf.

"Thanks so much to everyone who helped push this — from senior social workers, to politicians, to the chief executive of the hospital. Everyone has tried so hard, but there just isn't the staff," he added.

His neurologist had also given him a prognosis that brought everything into sharper focus. "My neurologist gave us the news that I likely have about 1 year left (obviously he can't say for definite and we still have hope for the drug trial to buy some more time too)," Campbell shared. "So I don't want to risk a significant amount of that time being in a hospital bed."

The "Game of Thrones" actor thanked everyone who had contributed to his GoFundMe campaign as well, noting that the funds would go towards specialist care regardless of his decision about the operation. "I'm still overwhelmed by all your generosity," he noted.

Then, characteristically, Campbell pivoted. "Anyway — still lots to live for and lots planned — here's my wee godson Micheál visiting me in hospital," he typed. The sweet photograph showed Campbell in his wheelchair, ventilator in place, the infant Micheál propped comfortably in his arms.

Despite the stark prognosis, his closing lines carried a sense of determination and emotional grounding, centred on family, connection, and the moments that still mattered.
