In a recent interview, the Grammy-winning artist shared how deeply personal this performance is for him. He revealed that he is honoring his late grandfather, a man who played a pivotal role in his life.
“I’m thinking alot about my personal story and the story in this country and the story of how we can honor the best of us,”, Batiste said. "You know my grand father in my life was one of my great mentors."
Batiste described his grandfather as a trailblazer who helped integrate the U.S. Navy. "He was the first wave of integrating the navy. He was the first wave of many of our greatest achievements," he said.
Batiste explained that his performance went beyond music, emphasizing that he was singing to honor his family's legacy and those who had served the country. He noted that his performance was dedicated to people who understood both the value of freedom and the pain of losing it.
Additionally, he expressed that he wanted his singing to serve as a source of unity and healing during a time when it was greatly needed. Beyond the anthem, Batiste hopes his Super Bowl performances and artistry will have a lasting impact. "I want my music to do, to just really make everybody's lives better," he added.
A seven-time Grammy winner with 22 nominations to his name, Batiste is no stranger to the spotlight. But this time, the moment carries even greater meaning.
