In a past interview, the second lady opened up about her relationship with J.D. When asked if her husband changes his mind based on her advice, Usha said, "He treats everything I say with a lot of seriousness and respect, and that becomes the way that he thinks about things."

She continued, "As is true for me, the way that he talks about things and the conclusions he comes to really shape the way that I think about things. So there's a nice give and take that I think is a pretty happy, happy one."

J.D. first served in the Marines before pursuing an undergraduate degree and later attended law school, where he met Usha. She revealed that they had classes together and were friends during their first semester before they started dating.

Usha added, "I think it comes from seeing my family and knowing that the stability and sort of calm that I provide in our family life comes from, you know, all of the support that I had. Just the faith that things will be okay because I had people behind me."
