In a 2014 interview with Entertainment Tonight, he revealed that his drug use began early, experimenting with marijuana and ecstasy by the age of 11. Over time, his substance use escalated. Elijah said he had been looking to escape the things in his past, which led to his use of heroin and opiates.

He explained that, at one point, heroin felt like a lifeline and admitted that without it, he didn't know what he would have done, suggesting that he might have considered ending his life. Elijah noted that surviving that difficult period and eventually getting help had been crucial.

He also described moments of being dangerously close to death. "I always kind of kept it a little bit safe, but you never can do that," he said. "Even though you think that in your mind, of course, the wrong things can happen. The wrong combination of things can happen and you can just slip into the abyss."

At the time, Elijah admitted he knew what he was doing was wrong and that he was deeply dissatisfied with life. In early 2024, Cher sought legal control over Elijah's financial and medical affairs through a conservatorship petition. She filed a request with the Los Angeles Superior Court.

The singer argued that his long-standing battle with addiction, along with mental and physical health concerns, left him unable to manage his finances responsibly.

Cher's concern centered on a $120,000 annual trust fund set up by Elijah's late father. The singer feared that the $10,000 monthly payouts could be used to purchase drugs, potentially endangering his life.

However, the petition was denied. Judge Jessica Uzcategui rejected the request, citing procedural issues. The court ruled that Elijah had not received adequate notice of the action and had not been given access to confidential documents related to the case.

Cher's legal team, led by attorney Gabrielle Vidal, argued for an exception to the standard five-day notice period. Vidal told the court that without immediate action, Elijah's access to his trust fund could result in a life-or-death scenario. Nonetheless, the judge declined to bypass standard procedure, effectively halting the conservatorship effort.
