Penny Lancaster Makes Candid Confession About Husband Rod Stewart Picking Out Her Clothes
After nearly 30 years together, Penny Lancaster is finally revealing the truth about life with Rod Stewart, and it's every bit as extravagant, eccentric, and emotionally charged as you'd imagine.
She's been married to a rock legend for nearly three decades — but only now is Penny Lancaster revealing what it really takes to stay in harmony with one of music's most famously particular men.
In a recent, no-holds-barred interview, the former model opens up about her extraordinary relationship with Rod Stewart, revealing a world of rituals, rules, and emotional revelations behind the glamor.
From lavish routines and obsessive habits to a surreal run-in with Donald Trump at a high-society event, Lancaster lifts the lid on the real man behind the rock legend façade — and the delicate dance of love, loyalty, and unspoken expectations that defines their life together.
Stewart's Home Life Is Ruled by Routine and Tradition
From the beginning, Stewart's sense of decorum set him apart. Lancaster remembers being caught off guard on their very first date.
"I couldn't fathom why he stood up in a show of chivalry when I went to the restaurant loo, thinking he wanted to leave," she recalled. That moment would become the first glimpse of a man whose lifestyle is rooted in strict personal codes — and whose habits have remained largely unchanged over time.
Whether at home or on tour, Stewart insists on order. He dresses for dinner, maintains a tightly organized household, and even travels with his elaborate model railway, sometimes dedicating an entire hotel room to it.
For Lancaster, learning to live alongside that structure meant striking a balance between admiration and adaptation. And eventually, it meant gently pushing back where it mattered.
A Longtime Preference Comes to Light
While many of Stewart's routines are visible, some only reveal themselves over time. One of the more surprising? His opinion on what Lancaster wears.

"He'll pick something up in a shop and say, 'Darling, look at this.' And I'll say: 'That's skintight and not for my tummy.' 'OK, what about this?' And I'll say, 'My boobs are too big for it, darling,'" she said, describing their frequent fashion debates.
But there's one style choice he's always opposed: trousers. And he's never been shy about saying so. The subject came up during the interview, ironically, as Lancaster was wearing trousers chosen by a stylist, revealing a long-standing, and still active, tension.
Lancaster Addresses the Question of Control
The conversation quickly turned toward what it means when personal preferences begin to shape another person's choices. Lancaster didn't flinch from the question.
"When you think about controlling, coercive behaviour and the signs to look for, you could think, hang on – telling me how to dress, what to wear," she acknowledged. But she was equally clear: that wasn't how she experienced it.

"But it wasn't coming from that direction. He knew I was coming into a lifestyle where there were wealthy people, and I was going to require different outfits," she shared. "And he thought: 'She's special, I'm going to treat her. I'm going to surprise her.'"
Still, Lancaster has found ways to set boundaries without confrontation and to remind her husband that her comfort matters too. She mused, "He doesn't see me as I see me. I've aged, but he doesn't see it. How lovely is that?"
A Tense Encounter With Trump Marked a Turning Point
Later in the conversation, Lancaster recalled a moment that had nothing to do with clothes and everything to do with boundaries. It happened about eight years ago at an event hosted by Donald Trump. The bar was overcrowded, and Stewart had waited 20 minutes without being served. That's when Lancaster stepped in.
"I went over to Trump and explained the situation. He said: 'This is unacceptable,' and marched up to the bar and ordered the barman to stop serving everyone else," she narrated. "He shouted at the guy, then started barking at me: 'How many of you? Six? What does everyone want?' I said I’ll make it easy. And he said, 'No! What does everyone want?' I said, 'OK, six apple martinis, please.'"
"He went, 'Right, get these martinis going.' He passed one to me, told me to try it, and asked: 'Any good?' I said to the barman, 'It's the best apple martini I've ever tasted.' I wanted to let him off the hook. Trump said: 'Happy now?'" she continued.
The evening left a bitter taste and led to a firm decision. She recalled, "That was our last evening there. I told Rod I was never going again. And as things became worse and his behaviour more apparent, Rod said, 'I'm glad you put your foot down.'"

Stewart Denies Tabloid Rumors of Marital Strain
Over the years, the couple has weathered relentless media speculation. In 2024, when rumors of a rift resurfaced in the tabloids, Stewart took to Instagram to respond directly.
"Despite erroneous articles in the Daily Mail and other tabloids that followed suit. We wanted to put the record straight," he wrote. "There is absolutely no rift between Penny and I and no disagreement over where we should reside, in fact it's the opposite."
He added, "Penny and I could not be more in love with each other after 27 glorious years. Please trust me on this… there's no disharmony in our marriage."
The Couple Faced a Health Crisis in Private
Over six years ago, their bond was quietly tested when Stewart was diagnosed with prostate cancer, a diagnosis the couple kept private for two years.
"Oh, we were absolutely shattered," he said."But I had this marvelous specimen of a woman by my side. She worked for two years, you know, knowing that it was there."
Lancaster's quiet strength, he added, never wavered. In early 2019, Stewart got an all-clear.
He'd Sworn He'd Never Marry Again – Until Her
Before Lancaster, Stewart had made his stance on marriage perfectly clear — he was done. But meeting her changed everything.
"I really did. I swore I was never getting married again. But this one is irresistible. Look at that face," he told reporters in 2018.
Their 2007 wedding marked a new chapter for Stewart, not just romantically, but emotionally. And according to Lancaster, the partnership that followed has been defined by communication, loyalty, and room to grow.
Lancaster Reclaims Her Identity in New Memoir
Lancaster has long stood beside a global star, but she's never let it define her.
In her memoir, "Someone Like Me," she reflects on a life shaped by bullying, IVF, depression, and public judgment, as well as her decision to serve the public as a volunteer with the City of London Police.
Her story is not just one of survival, but self-definition and proof that love doesn't have to mean disappearing into someone else's world.
