On October 30, 2025, Hollywood star Jesse Eisenberg and his fellow "Now You See Me: Now You Don't" cast mates sat down for an interview on "Today." During the segment, Eisenberg revealed an upcoming procedure he has scheduled to donate a vital organ to a stranger in need, explaining what fueled his decision and how the process works.

From the Red Carpet to a Hospital Room

Though the conversation initially centered around his upcoming film, Eisenberg shifted the spotlight in a strikingly personal direction when "Today" co-host Craig Melvin brought up a story about how Eisenberg once participated in a blood drive at the show. The star then mentioned his forthcoming donation.

As the "Today" hosts registered the unexpected statement, Eisenberg elaborated, explaining that the decision stemmed from a growing urge to give — one that began with a simple act. "I got bitten by the blood donation bug," he said, noting that his passion for helping others has intensified over the years.

With his characteristic calm vibe and humility, the 42-year-old actor casually announced, "I'm actually donating my kidney in six weeks. I really am [...] I'm doing an altruistic donation [in] mid-December," he confirmed with sincerity. "I'm so excited to do it."

At another point, he quipped, "Yeah, I just have so much blood in me, and I feel like I should spill it [...] I really like doing it, I don't know why." The "Zombieland" talent was also quick to ease any fears or concerns people may have, emphasizing the safety of the procedure and the critical need it fulfills.

"It's essentially risk-free and so needed," he shared. According to medical experts, altruistic donations — in which donors give a kidney to someone they don't personally know — play a vital role in keeping the transplant system functioning, especially during shortages.

As it stands, according to the Health Resources and Services Administration, there is an organ donor shortage in the U.S., with approximately 90,000 people waiting for a kidney on the transplant list as of September 2024.

A Chain Reaction of Hope

Eisenberg didn't stop there. He went on to explain how an altruistic kidney donation works — and it's far more powerful than many may realize, going far beyond a simple one-to-one match.

"Let's say person X needs a kidney in Kansas City, [and] their child or whoever was going to donate to them is, for whatever set of reasons, not a match, but somehow I am," he explained. "That person can still get my kidney [...] But it goes to a bank where that person can find a match recipient, but it only works if there is basically an altruistic donor."

It turns out, this remarkable act of generosity has been ten years in the making. Eisenberg shared that he once contacted an unnamed organization about donating, but never heard back. Then, fate intervened.

After mentioning his desire to donate to a doctor friend, he was pointed to NYU Langone Health, and within 24 hours, Eisenberg was in the hospital undergoing a series of tests. Now, the life-changing procedure is just weeks away.

'It's Risk-Free for My Family, As Well': Jesse Eisenberg Dives Deeper into His Donation

Acknowledging potential hesitations from others who may consider doing altruistic donations but are worried that any of their family members may end up needing a kidney transplant, he reassured viewers with one more important detail.

Through the National Kidney Registry's family voucher program, donors can name loved ones to be prioritized. "The way it works now is you can put a list of whoever you would like to be the first to be at the top of the list," he stated, confirming he's already done so for his own family. "So it's risk-free for my family, as well."

His path to stardom began early. Raised in East Brunswick, New Jersey, he was acting in children's theater by age ten and landed his first television role at 16. Just a few years later, he was awarded "Most Promising New Actor" at the San Diego Film Festival for his breakout role in "Roger Dodger."

With a filmography defined by emotional nuance and unexpected humor, Eisenberg continues to captivate audiences — often by simply being unapologetically himself.

'We Write Songs Together': Jesse Eisenberg's Greatest Role Yet

Beyond his accomplishments on screen and his remarkable act of generosity, Eisenberg finds his greatest joy in fatherhood. The actor shares a close bond with his young son, whom he calls "an artsy, interesting kid." The two often write music together — a creative outlet that Eisenberg describes with unmistakable pride.

"We write songs together. My kid is a brilliant musical kid, so we write songs together," he disclosed to People back in February. Though he tends to keep his family life private, Eisenberg has spoken candidly about how becoming a father has changed him.

"I spent the first 35, sorry 33 years of my life worrying about myself," he admitted. "And then I spent the next seven years worrying about real things, worrying about another person. And I know it sounds like a self-serving excuse, but it's made me a lot happier."

Married to his longtime partner Anna Strout — the mother of his son — since 2017, Eisenberg has built a quiet, fulfilling life off-camera, grounded in creativity, compassion, and love.
