Cause of Death Confirmed
Toxicology results from the Jefferson County Coroner's Office revealed that both students died of carbon monoxide poisoning. The department confirmed the deaths were ruled accidental, citing a problem with the vehicle's exhaust.
In a letter to the campus community on the same day, Franciscan University President Father Dave Pivonka addressed the devastating news.

Campus Events Canceled
All scheduled events for that evening were canceled as the campus reeled from the loss. Instead, the university held a Holy Hour and Rosary at 7 p.m. in Christ the King Chapel.
The intention was "to place Luke and Mary into the loving hands of our Lord," Father Pivonka shared. Support services were also made available in residence halls and at the J. C. Williams Center.
