Gunfire Sparks Panic at the Event

The White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington, DC, began as a polished evening of politics and media but quickly unraveled into panic when gunshots shattered the calm.

President Donald Trump was rushed offstage at the Washington Hilton hotel on Saturday evening, April 25, after the shots were fired outside the ballroom.

Inside, the annual media gala had been in full swing, with top administration officials in attendance. Within moments, Secret Service agents moved quickly to secure the area and protect those inside.

Outside the event, the situation escalated when the suspect attempted to push past security outside the event. Authorities said he "got off a couple shots" and struck a Secret Service agent wearing a bulletproof vest before being quickly apprehended. The Secret Service agent injured during the incident received medical treatment and was later discharged.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed the details, adding that they were still trying to pin down his motive as much as it seemed his target were members of the administration. Inside the ballroom, panic spread as attendees realized what was happening just outside the venue.

Suspect's Background and Cross-Country Journey

Authorities identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California. In recent years, Allen became more politically active, according to information his sister, who lives in Rockville, Maryland, shared with authorities.

His involvement included joining The Wide Awakes, a left-leaning group whose name references 1860s anti-slavery activists who supported Abraham Lincoln's presidential bid. Federal Election Commission records also show that he contributed $25 to Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign in October 2024.

Investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives found that he purchased a .38-caliber semi-automatic pistol from a southern California store on October 6, 2023. He later bought a 12-gauge shotgun from another gun shop in his hometown of Torrance on August 17, 2025.

Both purchases were made legally and required background checks through the FBI, confirming that he was not flagged as wanted, under a restraining order, or a convicted felon. After making these plans, Investigators say Allen traveled across the country by train, moving from Los Angeles to Chicago and eventually to Washington, DC.

He checked into the same downtown hotel hosting the high-profile dinner attended by Trump and other officials. He arrived armed with the .38-caliber semi-automatic pistol and 12-gauge shotgun.

A Chilling Note Comes to Light

Before the attack, Allen allegedly sent a written message to family members, referring to himself as the "Friendly Federal Assassin" and expressing anti-Trump sentiments. The note began, "Let me start off by apologizing to everyone whose trust I abused."

The message outlined several general complaints that may have guided investigators toward a possible motive, including frustration over conditions in detention facilities and a remark that seemed to label Trump a "traitor."

It also reportedly outlined Allen's intent to target administration officials and included the stark admission, "I don't expect forgiveness." The note included apologies to his parents, colleagues, and students.

It also indicated that law enforcement was not his primary target, but he suggested that he would have been willing to confront anyone in his way if necessary.

In the message, he framed his actions as consistent with his interpretation of Christian beliefs, arguing that failing to act in the face of others' oppression amounted to complicity. He ended the note with strong anger toward the administration, saying, "I experience rage thinking about everything this administration has done."

After the message surfaced, his brother alerted the New London Police Department in Connecticut out of concern, while other relatives also contacted law enforcement agencies. Authorities are also reviewing his social media activity and speaking with family members to better understand his motivations.

Trump Reacts After the Incident

Despite the chaos, the president, First Lady Melania Trump, and members of the Cabinet were unharmed. In a news conference following the incident, Trump said that when he heard the noise, he hoped it was a tray but it ended being gunshot sound.

Still, he noted that "Melania was cognizant," adding that she knew immediately that it was a "bad noise." The president went on to say that he and the first lady love the country but also recognize the risks that come with his job as the president and hers as well.

"I do it for the country. I am not doing it for any other reason," he said. Trump also praised the Secret Service for doing a great job. He said the suspect had charged a security checkpoint and was "taken down" by the Secret Service.

He described the attacker as a "very sick person" and a "thug" who had attacked the US Constitution. Providing reassurance, Trump said the injured Secret Service officer was saved by his vest and was "doing great."

He added, "As you know, this is not the first time in the past couple of years that our republic has been attacked by a would-be assassin who sought to kill."

Trump also called for unity in the aftermath, "In light of this evening’s events, I ask that all Americans recommit with their hearts in resolving our differences peacefully." When asked whether he believed he was the intended target, Trump replied, "I guess".

From Educator to Suspect

What has stunned many is Allen's academic and professional background. He worked part-time as a teacher at C2 Education, a test prep and tutoring company, where he was names as teacher of the year in December 2024.

He indicated that he worked as a video game developer and had released an indie title called "Bohrdom" on the Steam platform, priced at $1.99. Federal trademark records show that he secured a trademark for the game's name in 2018.

The game is characterized on Steam as a skill-based, non-violent asymmetrical fighting experience inspired by a chemistry model with loose ties to real-world concepts. On LinkedIn, he noted that he was in the process of developing a second game under the working title "First Law."

Allen also has an impressive educational history. He earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 2017. At this institution, he took part in the Christian Fellowship organization and its Nerf Club.

Facebook photos from 2016 also show Allen at Christian Fellowship events at the institution. Afterwards, Allen obtained a master's degree in computer science in 2025 from California State University at Dominguez Hills.

A university spokesperson confirmed that a student named Cole Allen graduated with a master's degree from California State University, Dominguez Hills in 2025. However, the spokesperson added the institution could not confirm if it was the same individual involved in the shooting.

The university's statement noted, "CSUDH unequivocally condemns this act of violence, as well as all forms of violence. Such acts betray our values as a university and our commitment to fostering a safe environment for our campus communities."

It concluded, "Out of respect for the active and ongoing law enforcement investigation, the California State University and CSUDH will not offer further comment at this time."

Investigation Ongoing

Law enforcement agencies began reconstructing Allen's movements and examining potential motives. According to the White House, Secret Service agents and Montgomery County police interviewed his sister in Rockville. Meanwhile, FBI agents gathered outside a residence in Torrance, a suburb of Los Angeles, believed to be connected to him.

Authorities cordoned off part of the street with police tape and directed a spotlight toward the home as reporters assembled nearby and news helicopters circled overhead.

A neighboring resident, who asked not to be identified, was uncertain whether Allen lived at the property and noted that he had only been seen there a few days earlier. The neighbor also described the suspect's father as approachable and talkative, mentioning that they interacted regularly.

Allen is now facing multiple charges, including two counts of using a firearm and one count of assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon. Authorities say he is not cooperating with investigators as they continue to examine his background, communications, and possible motives.

The incident has raised renewed concerns about security at high-profile political events — and how someone with no immediate red flags could come so close to carrying out a deadly attack.
