The Wayans family's mark on American entertainment is unmistakable. On February 22, 2025, the family was inducted into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame. Damon Wayans accepted the honor with Kim, Marlon, Craig, Chaunté, and Damien Wayans, and his son Damon Wayans Jr. at his side.

Speaking to People, Damon said, "I think my parents would be very, very happy for us. And they know that without them, there'd be no us, and they would really take all the credit."

Ten Siblings, One Foundation

The Wayans siblings were raised in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood during the 1970s. The five boys — Dwayne, Keenen, Damon, Marlon, and Shawn — and five girls — Diedra, Kim, Elvira, Nadia, and Devonne, who goes by Vonnie — grew up under the same roof.

In 2014, Keenen Ivory Wayans recalled their upbringing, sharing, "When you have ten people in an apartment in the projects and a breadwinner who's not winning much bread, it is a constant, creative way of surviving."

Their father, Howell Wayans, instilled structure from the beginning. "He made us get out of bed then and get him coffee," Shawn Wayans told Phillyburbs in 2017. "That made us who we are since we started our days early and worked hard all of our life."

Their mother, Elvira, refused to accept welfare. "Because you're of the ghetto doesn't mean you are ghetto," she would say. The children contributed from a young age by shining shoes, collecting bottles, delivering groceries, anything legal that could help the household.

Half Chose Hollywood, Half Chose a Different Life

Only five of the ten siblings pursued careers in entertainment: Keenen, Damon, Kim, Shawn, and Marlon. The youngest, Marlon, frequently joked about his older brothers.

"Shawn used to always beat me up because he was older than me," he told the Hartford Courant in 2014. "Keenan is so old that he once spanked me. And then there is Damon. He was always needy, and he still is needy."

Still, Marlon credited his brothers with showing him the way. "Damon and Keenan's success showed me that the unattainable is attainable if you work hard for it," he said. "They worked hard for it, and so did I."
