Daughter of Minnesota Gubernatorial Candidate Jeff Johnson Found Deceased in Her Apartment

Authorities were called to a St. Cloud apartment Saturday night after a report of a medical emergency involving a young woman.

When responders arrived at the apartment on 40th Avenue South around 8:20 p.m. on February 7, 2026, they found Hallie Marie Tobler, 22, unresponsive inside the residence.

The Midwest Medical Examiner later determined that Hallie had passed away as a result of multiple injuries.

Husband Also at the Scene

Her husband, Dylan Michael Tobler, 23, was also inside the apartment at the time, according to authorities.

He was found with injuries they described as self-caused. Authorities said Dylan will be taken into custody after his injuries are treated.

At the time responders arrived, officials said no one else was inside the apartment.

Political Connection Confirmed

The case drew broader attention days later, when it was confirmed that Hallie was the daughter of Dr. Jeff Johnson, a Republican candidate for Minnesota governor.

In a Facebook post on Monday, the Minnesota Republican Party said Johnson suspended his campaign following his daughter's passing, describing the incident as a "violent crime."

Party Statement Released

"The Minnesota Republican Party is heartbroken by the tragic loss of Dr. Jeff Johnson's daughter, who was killed in a violent crime Saturday night in St. Cloud," the statement read.

"There are no words that can adequately express the sorrow we feel for Jeff and his family."

Clarifying Jeff Johnson's Background

Dr. Johnson is a former St. Cloud city council member.

He is not the same Jeff Johnson who previously served as Hennepin County Commissioner and ran for governor in 2014 and 2018.

Relationship Shared on Social Media

Public social media posts show that Hallie and Dylan had been together for several years before marrying.

In an August 2021 Facebook post, Hallie's mother, Julie Johnson, wrote, "Now that all our immediate family has heard the news I can finally share - Hallie Johnson and Dylan Tobler are engaged!"

The post said the couple had been together for nearly five years and were planning their future together.

Investigation Continues

Authorities said the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting with the investigation.

Officials have not released additional details about what led up to the incident.
