The mood on ITV shifted in seconds for some viewers on February 19, 2026, when news broke live on "This Morning" that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor had been arrested.

As the panel tried to process the development in real time, host Alison Hammond's off-the-cuff remark about the timing of the arrest quickly became a story of its own.

Hammond, 51, was discussing the breaking update with co-host Dermot O'Leary, alongside Nick Ferrari and Sonia Sodha, when she appeared to question why police moved on the day of Mountbatten-Windsor's birthday.

Referencing the date, she said, "I mean, surely, they could've done it yesterday, the day before his birthday. Do you know what I mean?"

It didn't take long for some viewers to post their reactions online, with many describing the comment as tone-deaf given the seriousness of the allegation and the public scrutiny surrounding the former Duke of York.

One person wrote, "'They could have done it the day before his birthday' Jesus this is the least he deserves. Did she really say that," while another person replied, "right? like he wvwe cared about Virginia's birthday? or other victim's birthdays [sic]?"

Another commenter focused on the principle rather than the timing, writing, "Alison who cares whether its his birthday [sic]. Get a grip!!!!" A third added, "Stunned that Alison seems more concerned they spoilt his birthday."

Others seized on the phrasing itself, suggesting it did not make sense. One person typed, "'They could have arrested him the day before his birthday?' Shouldn't that have been the day after? What brilliant journalism lol!"

Another wrote, "Allison im shocked with your comment it was his birthday are you saying they should have waited. What about his victim's!!! Birthdays I'm sure they haven't enjoyed there birthdays ever. .. [sic]"

However, not everyone was solely critical of Hammond, with one viewer suggesting the timing of the breaking news may have left the presenters scrambling. "I think you're right , I suppose it did literally break as they went on air and cought them off guard [sic]," a final netizen speculated.

Still, the dominant reaction online was outrage, with viewers arguing the birthday detail was irrelevant at best, and sympathetic at worst.

Away from the studio reaction, Thames Valley Police said a man in his 60s from Norfolk had been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, and confirmed searches were under way in Berkshire and Norfolk.

Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright said the force had opened an investigation following an assessment, stressing the need to protect the integrity of the process. He added, "We understand the significant public interest in this case, and we will provide updates at the appropriate time."

The arrest came after renewed scrutiny over Mountbatten-Windsor's past links to convicted sex offender and multi-millionaire Jeffrey Epstein, and allegations involving the handling of confidential information.

It was claimed that the ex-prince passed confidential files to Epstein connected to four trips he made as a UK trade envoy in November 2010, and that "confidential" documents relating to the proposed reconstruction of Helmand Province in Afghanistan were also reportedly forwarded on Christmas Eve in 2010.

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has repeatedly denied wrongdoing. He has also been pulled back into the spotlight after millions of pages of documents were released by the US Department of Justice, with pressure mounting for him to speak to authorities in both the UK and the US about what he knew about Epstein.

Misconduct in public office is a serious offence and carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. For many watching at home, that gravity was exactly why Hammond's birthday remark landed so badly — and why a brief line, said during a breaking-news scramble, became the clip viewers could not stop replaying.
