The "Grey's Anatomy" star passed away on February 19, 2026, at age 53 in Los Angeles after a 10-month battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Friends, loved ones, and fans have rallied to support his family financially.

A GoFundMe campaign launched in the name of Eric Dane's teenage daughters was placed under review. The fundraiser has drawn controversy online, with many questioning why the actor's family would need financial assistance.

Fundraiser Frozen as Questions Swirl

The GoFundMe, which aims to raise funds for 15-year-old Billie and 14-year-old Georgia, was halted as the company reviewed who organized it and how the funds would be managed.

Titled "In Honor of Eric Dane," the fundraiser was created by an account identifying itself as "Friends of the Dane Family," with a $500,000 goal to help the sisters. At the time of publication, it had already raised over $420,000 from roughly 3,800 donations. During the review period, the campaign link was unavailable and not accepting contributions.

A GoFundMe spokesperson explained, “Our Trust and Safety team is still looking into this GoFundMe and has reached out to the organizer to gather additional information. All funds are being safely held by our payment processors during this review process. We can follow up as soon as there is an update available."

The platform's website outlines the process for campaigns under review. The company notes that a banner appears on the fundraiser dashboard.

Additionally, an email titled "Urgent Message from GoFundMe – Response Required" is sent to the organizer, who is urged to check spam, junk, or inbox folders. The organizer must follow the instructions in that email for the fundraiser to be reinstated.

Campaign Verified as Doubts Are Cleared

Since then, the campaign has been verified, suggesting that organizer Mike McGuiness met GoFundMe's requirements. The fundraiser page shows that it is organized by friends of the Dane family for Eric's wife, Rebecca Gayheart. It has now officially listed the movie star's family as the beneficiary.

It reads, "Any contribution, no matter the size, will help provide stability during this incredibly difficult time and in the future for Eric’s wonderful daughters."

Mike has confirmed that he was behind the campaign to support Eric's daughters and their future needs. The fundraiser notes that Eric's illness progressed far faster than expected, increasing the financial burden.

Mike expounded on this, saying, "Covid and ALS did a number on his work life, and he sadly couldn't leave his family with the resources he had hoped." Despite his comments, Mike's name does not appear on the GoFundMe page, and the company did not officially confirm him as the organizer.

Eric is survived by his wife, Rebecca, and their two daughters. So far, the family's representatives have not publicly commented on the GoFundMe campaign.

GoFundMe's review comes amid heightened scrutiny of public crowdfunding efforts launched after high-profile deaths, including one for "Dawson’s Creek" actor James Van Der Beek, which quickly surpassed its initial fundraising goal.

Online Backlash Erupts over the Fundraiser

Now, the Danes' fundraiser quickly became a talking point online, with people split over whether it was necessary and appropriate. One commenter suggested that previous campaigns might have inspired others to do the same, "Bc all it took was for one to do it, and more of them will. I been thinking about starting one for bray college expenses lol. Let me try and see what folk will say 🤣 [sic]."

Another person questioned financial planning, "I don't know how people with kids don't buy life insurance- it's not even that expensive per month, and it will make sure they are taken care of after you're gone."

Meanwhile, someone else defended the family, "Medical bills EVEN WITH INSURANCE probably took everything they had, or most of it. Insurance doesn't cover everything, and he had a very intensive condition. Where people choose to donate their hard-earned money is none of anyone else's business."

ALS Battle, Mounting Bills, and a Fortune Dwindled

Although Eric had enjoyed a successful television career — including seven seasons on "Grey’s Anatomy" and a role in HBO's "Euphoria" — his ALS diagnosis significantly affected his ability to work.

As the disease progressed, he became wheelchair-bound and required around-the-clock care. The cost of managing ALS is widely known to be substantial, particularly when families pursue leading specialists and comprehensive treatment plans.

As a result, Eric's financial situation was reportedly strained. "He spent a fortune on getting the best doctors, which insurance doesn't always cover, and he had to hire full-time care," a source divulged.

The same source noted, "I don't know if I would say Eric was broke when he died, but I don't think there was a lot of money in his bank account."

In the final months of his life, Eric was said to have stayed in a Los Angeles property owned by Johnny Depp without paying rent, a move that reportedly helped reduce financial pressure.

For someone who once stood at the peak of network television success, the shift marked a sobering chapter. During this time, Rebecca focused on maintaining stability for their daughters, who had been living with her full-time for several years.

A Secret Final Interview Is Released

Months before his death, amid his battle with ALS, Eric recorded a final interview for Netflix's "Famous Last Words." The conversation was filmed in secret and released only after he passed away.

At the end, he addressed his teenage daughters directly, reflecting on their shared memories — especially beach days — and acknowledging that while he had stumbled at times, he always tried.

He shared four lessons he said the disease had taught him. The first was to live in the present instead of dwelling on regret. The second was to fall in love — whether with a person or a passion. The third was to choose loyal friends and appreciate those who truly show up. The fourth was to face life's challenges with dignity and resilience.

He closed by reminding his daughters that they had inherited his strength. Through tears, he expressed his deep love and pride for them, calling them his heart and his everything. Eric left them with words meant to guide them long after he was gone.

Fans Moved to Tears by His Last Words

Netizens quickly filled the comment sections with emotional reactions, many saying his final message stayed with them long after they watched it. One person wrote, "Wow. Heartbreaking but incredibly powerful words. All true. 🙏🏽❤️"

Another fan admitted, "I'm silently crying, as his words hit deep! This is so beautiful, and I will hear his words for a long time! ❤️" A third person shared, "This is beautiful and so powerful…. I am moved beyond words 😢"

And someone else pointed out a particularly emotional moment, "The fact that he had to hold back tears because he was unable to wipe his eyes made me tear up for him."

Though his message was meant for his daughters, it clearly resonated far beyond them — a reflection of the impact Eric Dane had on others, even in his final words.
