Christina Applegate Makes First Public Appearance in Almost Two Years
She once lit up television screens with razor-sharp wit and fearless charm. But when the "Dead to Me" actress stepped back into the spotlight this week, she laid bare her private pain in a raw, emotional return.
The 54-year-old star appeared on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" for her first public appearance in almost two years, promoting her upcoming memoir, "You with the Sad Eyes: A Memoir," set for hardcover release on March 3, 2026.

Christina Applegate opened up about her 2021 multiple sclerosis diagnosis, her agonizing childhood trauma, and the quiet ways she battles chronic pain behind closed doors.
A Diagnosis That Changed Everything
Multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, can cause pain, fatigue, and serious mobility issues. For Applegate, it altered the rhythm of daily life and her sense of self.
When host Jimmy Kimmel asked her to describe her outlook, she didn't sugarcoat it. "It's very hard for me to say that like I have a positive outlook about it. I have an outlook. That's all I can say," she said.
Kimmel pointed out that she often helps others feel better in tough moments. But Applegate made clear that her memoir is not about strength for show. It is about unfiltered truth.
"It was just my life. It's hard, guys. We all go through some things that are really difficult. It was really painful." she said. When Kimmel pressed her on who knew about these experiences, she revealed, "No one knew."
The Dark Secrets of Laurel Canyon
In "You with the Sad Eyes," Applegate revisits her childhood in Los Angeles' Laurel Canyon, and the memories are anything but glamorous.
According to People, she writes about growing up in an unstable home. Her mother, actress Nancy Priddy, struggled with heroin addiction, and Applegate endured abuse. She watched as her mother suffered at the hands of a physically abusive boyfriend — a man who later turned his violence toward her.
For decades, those memories stayed buried. Applegate has kept a journal since she was 10 years old, which was a private record of pain and survival. Recently, she allowed her 15-year-old daughter, Sadie, to read it. She said she wanted her daughter to understand that she, too, has lived through deeply painful moments.
Applegate shares Sadie with her husband, musician Martyn LeNoble. Since her MS diagnosis, daily life has dramatically shifted. She revealed that she now spends much of each day in or on her bed because movement is often too painful. Yet there is one ritual she refuses to give up: driving her daughter to school.

"I want to take her; it's my favorite thing to do. It's the only time we have together by ourselves," Applegate said. "I tell myself, ‘Just get her there safely and get home so you can get back into bed.' And that's what I do."
Naming the Pain
Even as her body betrays her, Applegate's humor remains razor sharp. On "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," she revealed that she has given each of her limbs nicknames — a coping mechanism wrapped in comedy.
"So, they're pretty funny. Um, and by the way, this is not like, you know, derogatory to any of the people that I'm saying it about because one of them is very famous," she said.

Her right hand is called Barbara, while her left hand is Stanley. Her right leg goes by Megan Markle, and her left leg is named Tutti.
When her limbs begin to feel strange, she calls out their names and yells at them, which is a surreal but heartfelt strategy to cope with the discomfort.
A Standing Ovation and a New Mission
Humor has always been part of Applegate's DNA. In a March 2024 appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," she described herself as having a "very sick sense of humor." That edge has not dulled, even in the face of illness.
In January 2024, she received a standing ovation at the 75th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. Using a cane, she walked onstage and became visibly emotional as the audience applauded. She had been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in "Dead to Me."
But beyond awards and applause, Applegate is channeling her platform into advocacy. She announced the launch of a new online community called "Next in MS," designed to create a space for people living with the disease to connect and share experiences.
Her advocacy also includes the podcast "MeSsy," co-hosted with friend and fellow actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who also lives with MS. The show offers raw conversations about chronic illness — the messy, unfiltered kind.
Applegate's return to late-night television marked a rare public appearance after nearly two years away. Through humor, candor, and unflinching reflection, she revealed the reality of her diagnosis, her family life, and the experiences that shaped her.
With Christina Applegate's memoir arriving in March 2026 and a new advocacy platform on the horizon, this chapter of her life is no longer hidden. It is open, and it is hers.
