Christina Applegate says her bedroom has become a refuge as she continues living with multiple sclerosis (MS), a condition that has significantly limited her mobility and daily routine.

The 54-year-old actress revealed that she now spends much of each day in or on her bed because moving around has become too painful. Despite the challenges, Applegate still prioritizes time with her daughter, Sadie, 15, whom she shares with her husband, Martyn LeNoble.

Driving the teenager to school and activities remains especially meaningful for the actress, even though it can be physically taxing. "I want to take her; it's my favorite thing to do. It's the only time we have together by ourselves," Applegate said.

The actress added that her goal during those trips is simple: "Just get her there safely and get home so you can get back into bed."

Applegate was diagnosed with MS in 2021 after experiencing symptoms for years. She later explained that issues such as leg buckling and numbness had appeared as far back as seven years before doctors confirmed the condition.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, MS is a progressive autoimmune disease that damages myelin, the protective coating around nerves in the central nervous system. The disorder can lead to symptoms including muscle weakness, numbness, vision problems and memory difficulties.

Applegate revealed that she received the diagnosis while filming the final season of her Netflix series "Dead to Me." Since then, she has largely stepped back from acting and shifted her focus toward advocacy and storytelling.

The "Dead to Me" star now co-hosts the podcast "MeSsy" with fellow actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who also lives with MS. Applegate has also launched an online community called Next in MS, designed to connect people who share the diagnosis and give them a place to discuss their experiences.

In November 2022, the actress made her first public appearance — more than a year after publicly sharing her diagnosis — when she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

She attended the ceremony using a cane and wore a manicure that spelled out a blunt message directed at the disease: "f u MS." However, while her physical world has narrowed, Applegate says it has also opened the door to deeper honesty about her life and health.

"My life isn't wrapped up with a bow," Applegate said. "People's lives, sorry for lack of a better term, [expletive] suck sometimes. So I'm being as honest and raw as I possibly can."

That candid approach carries into her memoir, "You With the Sad Eyes." The book explores major moments from her life, including her upbringing in Los Angeles' Laurel Canyon, early fame, motherhood, abusive relationships, and her battles with both breast cancer and MS.

Applegate has explained that much of the memoir comes directly from journals she kept when she was younger. To assemble the book, she also spent months recording long conversations about her life.

"I worked with someone who recorded me talking for six or seven hours a day, every single day, for months and months and months," the Hollywood star revealed.

The actress also spoke candidly about the deeply personal material in the book during an interview with Good Morning America. She explained that some of the entries had remained hidden for years in diaries she once kept private.

"Those things that I wrote in those diaries, in my journals, were locked in a box. I never wanted anyone to see them," Applegate said during the interview.

In the same conversation, she revealed that opening up about past trauma — including an abusive relationship — was partly motivated by her desire to help others who might feel isolated in similar situations.

"I know there's a lot of people who have been abused and have lived like really hard times and I just felt like I'm here for you," the beloved star shared.

Following the interview and news about her health struggles, many fans shared emotional reactions online. "She's just so amazing. So proud of her. To have something like she does that is so painful and yet still reach out to others through their pain is extraordinary!!!" one person wrote.

Another commented, "The depths of hurt, pain and honesty that Christina is willing to share with the world will heal 1 million people bravo. We need more authenticity. We need more unity. We need more healing. I love this girl."

Others expressed sadness about the actress's health challenges. "Horrible news. She doesn't deserve this!! 💔💔," one netizen wrote. A different commenter added, "Such a debilitating disease. My heart breaks for her and her family. Such an amazing actress. 🥺🙏🏽"

Another simply wrote, "This is so tragic." Some commenters also shared personal experiences with the disease. "I can relate!! 😢💔 it's [sic] devastating to not have the physical strength to do basics in life after being cursed with MS," one person said.

Another shared, "I understand. It's heartbreaking when what we thought our life would be is not. Being almost completely disabled is soul killing."

Despite the challenges she faces daily, Christina Applegate has continued to speak openly about her condition — using her platform to bring visibility to MS while offering solidarity to others navigating similar struggles.
