Dressed in a sleek black tuxedo with a satin bow tie, Carrey cut a quietly commanding figure under the warm auditorium lights. His shoulder-length hair framed a composed, almost wry expression as he stood poised amid a softly blurred crowd of formally dressed attendees.

But it wasn't just his outfit that had people talking.

On Reddit, under a thread discussing his appearance, one commenter wrote, "The filler is surprising from someone like Jim Carrey." Another added, "His new face is CRAZY." A third Redditor admitted, "did [sic] not recognize him at all at first, he looks so different from the last interviews I saw him in."

Over on Instagram, reactions were just as strong. One person commented, "He doesn't look like Jim Carrey 😮." Another wrote, "Umm [sic] since when did he get Botox? Nooooooooo Jim!” A third added, "He's def had work done. Not sure I like it. 😏" while someone else observed, "He did something to his face 🤔."

Even more whispers turned into wild speculation: Was it lighting? Was it styling? Or was it something far stranger? Then, things took an even more dramatic turn.

A Post That Elevated Speculation

Makeup Artist Alexis Stone — whose real name is Elliot Joseph Rentz — posted a carousel on Instagram that sent the rumor mill into overdrive. The caption reads simply, "Alexis Stone as Jim Carrey in Paris."

In the now-viral post, Stone shows what appeared to be prosthetics, a latex mask, fake teeth, and a wig eerily resembling Carrey's look at the ceremony. The transformation images were so convincing that many fans began to question everything.

Had the Hollywood icon really attended the ceremony, or had the audience been watching an elaborate impersonation?

Behind the Curtain in Paris

According to Variety, the swirling rumors may actually be a testament to Carrey's enduring cult status, but officials were quick to shut down the claims.

Gregory Caulier, the general delegate of the César Awards, made it crystal clear that Carrey's appearance was "authentic" and described it as "a historic moment."

In a statement sent to Variety, Caulier dismissed the speculation entirely:

"Jim Carrey's visit has been planned since this summer. From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy's invitation. Eight months of ongoing, constructive discussions. He worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words."

He continued, detailing just how personal the evening truly was:

"He came with his partner, his daughter, his grandson and [sic] 12 close friends and family members. His longtime publicist accompanied him. His old friend Michel Gondry, who has made a film and two series with him, was there, and they were delighted to see each other again."

As for the impersonation chatter? "For me, it's a non-issue. I just remember his generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, his elegance," Caulier concluded.

Carrey's emotional speech reportedly brought the crème de la crème of French cinema to its feet. Speaking onstage, he even traced his ancestral roots back to Saint Malo, disclosing, "About 300 years ago, my great, great, great, great, great, great-grandfather, Marc-François Carré," was born there before emigrating to Canada.

He also paid tribute to his late father, Percy Joseph Carrey, calling him "the funniest man I have ever known," and crediting him with teaching "the value of love, generosity and laughter."

The tribute segment of the evening also featured host Benjamin Lavernhe spoofing "The Mask" in the character's iconic yellow suit, a full-circle homage to Carrey's legacy. And yet, even with all of that heartfelt context, the internet couldn't quite let the rumors go.

Setting the Record Straight

That's when Carrey's own representative stepped in…

As reported by TMZ, the actor's longtime Publicist, Marleah Leslie, directly addressed the unfounded frenzy:

"Jim Carrey attended the César Awards, where he accepted his Honorary César Award."

Before Leslie's words, fans had jumped to "wild unfounded conclusions," the outlet noted, speculating that the person on stage might have been a stunt double or even a clone due to perceived changes in his appearance and demeanor.

But according to his reps, there was absolutely no mystery to solve. In other words, it was him. The irony? Carrey has built an entire career on transformation: elastic expressions, exaggerated characters, and uncanny physical comedy. It's perhaps no surprise that when he appears slightly different, audiences begin to wonder.

Still, many fans were thrilled to see Jim Carrey back on a major stage. After keeping a relatively low profile in recent years, his appearance felt like a reminder of his enduring star power and his ability to captivate without even saying a word.
