13-Year-Old British Boy, Alfie Hallett, Dies Trying to Protect His Mum - Details
As the heartbreaking details of the teenager's life — and the courage he showed in his final moments — emerged, the photos waiting at the end of this article offer a glimpse of the smiling boy his grandmother remembered as gentle, joyful, and full of life.
The final act of bravery in Alfie Hallett's short life was an attempt to save his mother. The 13-year-old British boy was stabbed to death inside the family apartment in Portugal on December 23, 2025, in an attack that shocked both local residents and relatives in England.
His mother's former partner, named locally as Goncalo Carvalho, is suspected of carrying out the assault before dying in a gas explosion at the property as police moved in.
Alfie's mother survived and was taken to hospital after being found badly beaten and tied up. According to local reports, she suffered facial injuries, had her hands and feet bound, and was reportedly rescued by neighbours.
The Portuguese Policia Judiciaria confirmed it was investigating the deaths of Alfie and the alleged attacker, both of whom had multiple stab wounds.
In a statement, the force said officers had responded to what appeared to be a domestic violence situation at the home. When police arrived, they noticed a strong smell of gas inside the property. Moments later, a gas explosion ripped through the residence, killing the suspect and injuring a responding officer.
Authorities also revealed that the family had previously been flagged in domestic violence cases registered in 2022 and 2023. According to reports, Alfie himself had bravely filed complaints about the abuse during that period.
Local parish council leader Luis Freire said there had been several violent incidents involving the couple in the past, noting that police were aware of tensions between them.
Neighbour Jaime Lopes, who helped Alfie's mother after the attack, described the extent of her injuries. "She was very scared, very badly beaten on her face," he said, adding that her hands and ankles were bound with plastic ties.
Residents in the area also revealed that arguments had occasionally been heard at the home and some feared the situation might eventually escalate.
For Linda Hallett, Alfie's grandmother, the news arrived with devastating force. Speaking from Bognor Regis, England, on December 24, 2025, she said a phone call that morning had left her "completely shocked" and struggling to process what had happened.
She also voiced the belief now haunting Alfie's family — that he died trying to protect his mother. Although the teenager had been born in Brighton and spent his early years in Bognor Regis, much of his childhood unfolded far from the rest of his family.
After his parents separated, Alfie and his mother later moved to Tomar, Portugal, in 2016 to live with a Portuguese man named Paulo. Linda said Alfie's father, Mark Hallett, had not been told where his son had gone at the time, and for years the family lost touch.
It was only in 2018, after Paulo contacted Linda on social media, that Alfie's whereabouts became known. Mark then travelled to Portugal, secured permission through the courts to re-establish contact, and brought his son back to England for Christmas that December.
For Linda, that visit became an especially painful memory. She remembered Alfie as a gentle, cheerful child who loved singing and dancing, and said he had been delighted to see his father again and meet his younger half-brother, Rocco, for the first time.
The family spent Christmas together in Tangmere, near Chichester, England, with outings to see Father Christmas and a visit to the Winchester Christmas Market. "Looking back, he was so happy then," Linda shared.
That reunion turned out to be the last time the family were all together. After Alfie returned to Portugal, Mark continued trying to build on that contact, regularly speaking to his son on FaceTime and seeking more time with him through the Portuguese authorities.
Sadly, Mark later died, meaning there was no second reunion. As the details emerged, tributes began pouring in online for the boy at the centre of the heartbreaking story. One person commented, "What a tragedy, a hero at such a young age. Too good for this cruel world, rest in eternal peace Alfie."
Another wrote, "Poor kid. Seems like he had a turbulent short life!" A third shared, "My heart aches for what the poor boy went through. How terrifying. 😔" Others focused on the cruel sequence of losses surrounding Alfie's life and death.
"His real dad passed away after spending that besitiful [sic] Christmas together and then he dies protecting his mum. What a cruel horrible world. The poor lad deserved so much more and better," one person said.
Another added, "That poor woman tj lose her sin and her grandson within a year [sic]." A further tribute read, "So very sad what a brave boy to die while trying to protect his mum," while another commenter wrote, "That poor little boy, what tragic ending for him 😞."
For those who knew Alfie, the case is not only about the violence that ended his life, but the child he had been before it — a boy his grandmother still remembered as warm and full of life.
