A black-tie evening celebrating the free press turned into a security crisis in less time than it takes to finish a dinner roll.

Panic disrupted the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner at the Washington Hilton on the evening of April 25, 2026. As the event began, the sound of gunfire forced President Donald Trump and his administration officials to scramble for cover and seek immediate safety.

The shooting was over in seconds, but the story behind the man who allegedly pulled the trigger is far more surprising than anyone would expect.

The Night Begins

Inside the hotel's grand ballroom, hundreds of the most prominent journalists in the country had gathered for one of the most-watched events on the Washington calendar.

At 8:12 p.m., an announcement over the speakers instructed the audience to find their seats because the event was about to start.

The guests of honor were introduced one by one at the head table, including Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, top White House correspondents from major outlets, and the evening's headline act, mentalist Oz Pearlman.

Just three minutes later, at 8:15 p.m., the United States Marine Band performed a fanfare as the announcer introduced the president and first lady.

The couple took their seats between Leavitt and Weijia Jiang, the CBS correspondent currently leading the White House Correspondents' Association. Vice President JD Vance sat a few seats away at the same table.

But they wouldn't stay comfortable for long.

Dinner, Then Chaos

After opening remarks from Jiang and a brass rendition of the national anthem, the room settled into dinner. Drinks were poured, salads made their rounds, and Pearlman worked the head table with his mentalism act.

At 8:34 p.m., while Pearlman was reportedly mid-trick attempting to guess the name of Leavitt's expected baby, five shots rang out in quick succession.

For a few stunned seconds, no one in the room quite understood what they were hearing. Antonia Hitchens, a writer for the New Yorker in attendance, recalled hearing a sound reminiscent of a caterer dropping a pile of plates down a staircase.

President Trump similarly remarked that he initially mistook the noise for a falling tray. Although Pearlman continued the performance for a brief moment, the atmosphere at the head table quickly shifted to panic.

Secret Service agents screamed for everyone to hit the ground while a group of agents in formal wear lunged across tables, even knocking over wine bottles, to protect the officials.

The Seconds That Upended the Room

In less than a minute, Secret Service agents hurried the presidential couple out of the room. The entire crisis, from the first shots to the successful evacuation of top officials, lasted less than 93 seconds.

Gary O'Donoghue, the BBC's chief North America correspondent, described hearing glass break and noted that he and others sought cover under their tables almost instantly.

At 9:17 p.m., Trump posted on Truth Social and confirmed that authorities had caught the suspected shooter. By 9:36 p.m., he informed the public that he was departing the hotel because law enforcement requested it, while security began leading guests out of the ballroom.

Later, at 10:29 p.m., Trump posted a video that seemed to capture the beginning of the attack and followed it with an image of the suspect.

Trump held a news conference from the White House alongside FBI chief Kash Patel and Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche at 10:30 p.m.

By 10:50 p.m., U.S. media, including CBS, named the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California.

Finally, around 11:15 p.m., U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro announced authorities planned to officially charge Allen in federal court on Monday, April 27.

The Secret Service agent struck in the attack was treated and released from the hospital. But the question the entire country was asking was: who, exactly, is Allen, and why did he do this?

A Teacher, a Game Developer, and a Plan

Checking the suspect's background is more than jarring because, on paper, Allen looked like a model young professional.

After graduating from the California Institute of Technology with a mechanical engineering degree in 2017, he pursued further education. He eventually earned a master's degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills, in 2025.

His professor there, Bin Tang, told CBS News that Allen was an exceptional student who consistently sat in the front row and remained highly engaged during lectures.

Tang also noted that he frequently followed up on assignments through email and described Allen as a soft-spoken, respectful, and pleasant individual. Therefore, Tang was extremely shocked by the news.

Following his graduation from Caltech, Allen took a part-time teaching position at the tutoring and test prep firm C2 Education. He remained in this role from March 2020 through the date of the shooting.

The company notably recognized his performance by naming him their teacher of the month in December 2024.

Alongside teaching, he spent years building indie video games, publishing a title called "Bohrdom" on Steam for $1.99, described as a "skill-based, non-violent asymmetric fighting game."

On LinkedIn, Allen noted he was developing a second game, with the working title "First Law." This contrast, an award-winning teacher and indie game-maker, becomes much harder to square with what came next.

The Radicalization

According to the White House, Allen's sister informed investigators that his opinions became increasingly radical as he grew more active in Los Angeles political circles.

He affiliated himself with "The Wide Awakes," a group that draws its name from the 19th-century anti-slavery activists who supported Abraham Lincoln's election.

He also participated in a "No Kings" protest in California, and FEC records show that he contributed $25 to Kamala Harris' presidential campaign in October 2024.

His relatives told authorities that he often spoke about a plan to fix global problems.

He regularly practiced at a shooting range and legally owned two weapons: a .38-caliber semi-automatic pistol in October 2023 from a Southern California shop, and a 12-gauge shotgun in August 2025 from a store in Torrance, where he lived with his parents.

Both sales cleared FBI background checks. Shortly before the shooting, he traveled by train from Los Angeles to Chicago and then to Washington, D.C., where he booked a room at the Washington Hilton.

The Supposed Note He Left Behind

Before attempting to storm the dinner, Allen reportedly sent family members a written statement. Authorities say he called himself the "Friendly Federal Assassin" and expressed explicit discontent with the current administration.

The note began with an apology to those whose trust Allen felt he had betrayed. He then listed various grievances, specifically mentioning detention camp conditions and labeling the current president a "traitor."

In the letter, being referred to online as a manifesto, Allen mentioned his parents, coworkers, and students. He stated that he did not plan to target police officers specifically, though he admitted he would confront anyone present if it was required to reach his primary targets.

Furthermore, he claimed his behavior aligned with his religious beliefs, arguing that ignoring the oppression of others is a form of complicity rather than a Christian virtue.

Once Allen's brother received this message, he contacted the New London Police Department in Connecticut to report his concerns. Although other relatives also notified various police agencies, Allen had already entered the hotel.

The Investigation Now: Finding a Motive

Acting Attorney General Blanche told the press, "We're still looking to try to understand a motive. From our preliminary investigation, it does appear the suspect was targeting members of the administration."

Blanche further added that Allen was not cooperating with authorities.

Currently, the teacher faces one count of assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon and two counts of using a firearm during a crime of violence.

Trump, meanwhile, described Allen's social media history as "anti-Christian," a striking detail given that Allen's own college years at Caltech included active involvement in the school's Christian Fellowship organization.
