Nia Long Dazzles at 2026 Met Gala in LaQuan Smith Creation — Photos
The first-time Met Gala attendee just showed up like she'd been doing it for decades, and the details hidden inside her dress might be the most touching part of all.
Nia Long walked the Metropolitan Museum of Art's steps on May 4, 2026, wearing a custom LaQuan Smith gown that took over 200 hours to make. But before you scroll to the photos, there's something tucked inside that dress you need to know about.
According to Marie Claire, Long's look was built around a sculptural neckline, upholstered hips, and a voluminous bustle train. Smith described the piece as "an ode to her '90s reign and timeless beauty," but what made it truly personal was a secret only the two of them shared.
The actress's mother, Talita Long, works as a visual artist. At age 18, she created her debut pen-and-ink piece, "The Mother and Child," and discovered she was pregnant with her daughter shortly after finishing the artwork.
Long and Smith chose to hide the painting within the dress's bow. This allowed her mother to be part of the evening in a deeply personal way, even though she remained in Los Angeles with Long's younger son, Kez Sunday Udoka.
While the "Michael" actress views herself as a casual mom who loves Chanel and farmers' markets, she took an active, hands-on role in every phase of the design process. She personally chose the fabric alongside Smith and traveled to his Queens studio to see the work in progress.
Therefore, the designer told the outlet that the collaboration was a genuine passion project and that they designed every curve and line to honor her presence and power. Furthermore, the self-awareness Long brings to her personal style ensured the entire process remained remarkably seamless, even for a first-time creator.
She attributed her demanding nature to a clear understanding of what suits her. In her view, this knowledge is a gift because it protects both the wearer and the artistry, especially for a high-pressure event like this one.
Her connection with Smith began when Estée Lauder appointed her as its North American ambassador, and he attended her celebratory dinner. The actress felt an immediate connection to his work because of his unapologetic approach to the female form.
Speaking to Marie Claire, the actress praised his deep understanding of a woman's silhouette and noted that his designs actually encourage women to express their sexuality rather than shy away from it.
Once the gown was finished, Long turned her attention to jewelry and arrived wearing more diamonds than she said she had ever seen in her entire lifetime. The centerpiece was a LEVIEV collar-shaped necklace featuring over 10 emerald-encrusted pendants, a striking contrast to the mysterious depth of her black velvet gown.
Although she typically steers away from committing to a full suite of high jewelry, this night she made an exception, pairing the necklace with a bold bracelet, matching earrings, and a cocktail ring.
Finally, stylists swept her hair into a polished updo with a gentle swoop, while her makeup featured a soft, glowing look achieved with Estée Lauder's natural Double Wear products. Overall, every detail served to highlight the gown and the diamonds rather than having pieces compete against each other.
Naturally, Long's Met Gala appearance hit Facebook hard, and people had a lot to say. "Necklace looks like a Harry Winston.. she's breath taking [sic]," one person wrote, while another added, "Best dressed ✅."
Not everyone was convinced by the plunging design, with one commenter writing, "The dress is too exposed," but the reaction leaned heavily toward admiration. "Simply beautiful.. the necklace is everything 💚💚💚💚🤍🤍🤍 she said the necklace is the theme ✨," read another comment, and someone else just wrote, "Where'd you get that necklace girl 👀."
Over on Instagram, the reaction was just as direct. "That neck piece! 😍" gushed one netizen, with another exclaiming, "Absolutely GORGEOUS🔥🔥❤️🔥." A second Facebook post drew more, with fans writing "Absolutely flawless Queen" and "STILL BEAUTIFUL 😍❤️."
