A night that began as an ordinary family dinner ended with three people dead on a rural Georgia highway, and the circumstances of how it happened are as heartbreaking as they are hard to believe.

James K. Walker, 65, his 18-year-old son Kencerio Deontae Walker, and Kencerio's girlfriend, 18-year-old Nykeria Laniya Johnson, were all involved in an incident on the road on May 23, 2026.

Just three days earlier, both teenagers had walked across the stage to receive their diplomas from Swainsboro High School, not knowing their futures would be over because of... nature.

Who Were the Victims?

Kencerio was more than a graduate that week. According to his aunt, Lisa Kennedy, he had finished school with honors, a milestone made even more emotional because his mother had passed away before she could witness it.

At the ceremony, balloons were released in her memory, a beautiful tribute in the middle of what was a joyful day.

Lisa posted about the graduation on May 22, the day before the crash, writing, "This graduation ceremony was filled with laughter and tears! [...] We love you Kencerio Walker and know your mom is smiling down from heaven."

Meanwhile, Nykeria's family described her as a beautiful soul with everything ahead of her.

James Walker, Kencerio's father, had his own deep ties to Swainsboro High School. He was a former employee of the school and someone the district remembered as a man who "always had a smile on his face and left a joyful impression on those he encountered."

Where Did the Crash Happen?

The three had spent the evening out to dinner together. They were traveling south on Highway 56 in Burke County, Georgia, roughly half a mile past Pine Hill Church Road, when the situation turned fatal.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene at approximately 9:05 p.m. that Saturday. When they arrived, investigators found two vehicles at the site: a black Jeep Cherokee and a blue Ford Taurus.

The Jeep was located on the north side of a massive downed tree, and authorities determined it had been struck directly by the fall.

The Taurus was found on the south side of the tree with substantial damage. Kencerio and his loved ones were found inside this vehicle, and all three were pronounced dead at the scene.

An 18-year-old man from Midville, Georgia, who was driving the Jeep, survived the crash with minor injuries and was taken to Piedmont Medical Center for treatment.

Although authorities confirmed that the falling tree had caused this incident, the Burke County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate.

What Brought Down the Tree?

Lisa explained that severe weather moved through the area that night. The large tree was toppled by the storm and came down across both lanes of the highway at once, striking both vehicles. It was the kind of freak accident that offers no warning and no time to react.

She shared the devastating news the morning after, adding several pictures of her nephew's graduation ceremony. "Last night I received a phone call that not only woke me up but literally knocked me off my feet, and right now I'm still trying to comprehend what happened," she wrote, going into the details of the incident.

Statesboro Mayor Jonathan McCollar reached out to the public to offer comfort, stating that the entire town supports their neighbors in Swainsboro during this incredibly painful period. He expressed that the tragic deaths of Kencerio, Nykeria, and James were a profound sadness that words couldn't fully capture.

Furthermore, he reassured the Swainsboro community that they were not facing this sorrow by themselves, as Statesboro joined them in prayer, mourning, and solidarity.

The memorial service for Nykeria is scheduled for May 29. Her GoFundMe has collected over $2,300 from 47 donors toward an $11,000 goal as of this publication. The description reads:

"The last thing this grieving family needs is a financial burden during this trying time."

A separate fundraiser for the Walker family, started by Kencerio's sister Latoya Walker, has brought in over $5,000 from 81 donors toward a $10,000 goal.

Both fundraisers kept things simple, as all they wanted was some help for the memorials of their loved ones. "Being this was so sudden and unexpected I am coming to y'all for help with sending them away properly. Anything will be helpful through this trying time," Latoya expressed.

At this time, we would like to offer our condolences to the families and loved ones of the Walkers and Johnsons who have suffered such a terrible loss.
