'Alaskan Bush People' Star Matt Brown’s Final Moments Revealed in 911 Call — Details
The reality TV star has been confirmed dead after authorities recovered his body in Washington state. As investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding his death, details about the search are beginning to emerge.
A witness's alarming 911 call helped launch the search that ended with the discovery of "Alaskan Bush People" star Matthew "Matt" Brown's body in a Washington river.
Days after authorities confirmed the TV star's death, details from that emergency report are drawing renewed attention as investigators continue working to determine exactly what happened.
Search Effort for Matt Brown Ends in Tragic Discovery
The 43-year-old's death was confirmed by the Okanogan County Sheriff's Office (OCCO) on May 31, 2026, days after a search began near Oroville.
According to the sheriff's office, a group of private citizens searching along the Okanogan River found a deceased individual on May 30. After recovering the body and bringing it to shore, authorities positively identified the individual as Matt.
Matt's body has since been transferred to the custody and care of the Okanogan County Coroner.
As officials continue investigating the circumstances surrounding Matt's death, his family has begun sharing details about the devastating days leading up to the discovery.
Bear Brown Shares a Painful Family Update
Following the confirmation, Matt's brother, Bear Brown, addressed the news in a TikTok video. "They found a body in the river a few hours ago and it was positively identified as being Matt," Bear said.

He also shared a heartbreaking detail about their younger brother Noah Brown's role in the recovery. According to Bear, Noah was the first family member to see Matt after the body was recovered.
"Noah helped them pull the body out of the water and Noah identified [Matt]," Bear said.
Bear also spoke about what he believes may have happened, while making clear that the coroner still had to examine Matt's body.
"I would've never thought that Matt would hurt himself. It does look as though it was self-inflicted," Bear said in his TikTok video.

He added that Matt had struggled with alcohol and drug addiction, along with other private issues. He asked fans to be respectful and avoid negative comments as the family mourns.
While questions remain about the circumstances surrounding Matt's death, records released by the sheriff's office provide a clearer picture of the incident that first prompted the search.
The 911 Call That Led to the Search
Days before Matt was identified, authorities received a troubling call near the river. At the time, the sheriff's office did not identify the man involved.
According to the May 27 statement, a caller told Okanogan 911 that he had just spoken to a man sitting in shallow water south of Oroville. The caller then reported that the situation changed within moments.
"The caller turned away from the man sitting in the river, heard a sound, turned back toward the man in the water and saw the man was face down in the water drifting away in the current," the sheriff's office said.
Law enforcement, fire crews, and emergency medical personnel responded to the area but were unable to locate the man.
Additional deputies joined the search with one boat, two jet ski-style watercraft, and an aerial drone. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife also assisted with a boat.
The sheriff's office said a firearm was recovered from the water in the area where the man was last seen. Search crews worked until dark on May 27 and resumed the next morning with watercraft, divers, and a drone.
Officials said elevated runoff made the search difficult and dangerous because of low visibility, faster current, and debris in the water. The search was later suspended on May 28 because of severe weather.
Two days later, private citizens searching along the river found a body that authorities later identified as Matt, bringing the search to an end. The OCCO has yet to determine his official cause and manner of death.
Before Matt's death was confirmed, questions surrounding his disappearance had drawn renewed attention to his most recent livestream and the family members who reportedly remained in contact with him.
Brother Seen Speaking With Investigators
As previously reported, Matt's brother, Gabe Brown, was among the family members who drew attention as investigators searched for answers.
According to TMZ, Gabe was observed at the location on Thursday talking with law enforcement officers. Sources told the outlet that investigators had also spoken with him the day before.
The discussions reportedly took place near the area where Matt was presumed to have been last seen alive.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed what information was exchanged, but Gabe's presence has drawn attention because of his unique position within the family.
As the search continues, questions remain about Matt's final days, his recent activities, and the people who may have had contact with him before he disappeared.
Concerns Grew Before He Went Missing
The renewed focus on Matt comes just weeks after a troubling public incident that raised concerns among viewers.
Earlier this month, Matt appeared in a YouTube livestream while walking through a public park in Washington state. During the broadcast, he allegedly appeared intoxicated and spoke incoherently while streaming to viewers.
At one point, he also appeared to be carrying a firearm while continuing the livestream.
The footage quickly attracted attention online, but sources familiar with the situation later suggested the behavior was part of a much longer pattern that had concerned family members for years.
Those concerns, according to reports, existed long before Billy Brown's death. The patriarch died after experiencing a seizure in February 2021.
A Family Rift Years in the Making
Behind the scenes, Matt's relationship with his family had reportedly changed dramatically over the past several years.
According to a separate TMZ report, family sources said concerns about Matt's alleged substance abuse struggles eventually led to a major decision within the Brown family.
The sources claimed that most family members cut ties with Matt roughly five years ago after determining they could no longer support him amid repeated problems.
The decision reportedly followed years of concern over his behavior and its impact on the family. But one reported detail makes the current investigation especially notable.
The One Relative Who Stayed in Contact
While most members of the family reportedly distanced themselves, sources said one sibling maintained occasional communication with Matt. That sibling was Gabe.
According to the report, Gabe was the only member of the Brown family who still spoke with Matt, though the contact was described as infrequent.
The revelation helps explain why investigators have reportedly been speaking with him as they continue trying to piece together Matt's movements and circumstances before his disappearance.
Yet even Gabe's continued contact reportedly stood in contrast to the broader position taken by the rest of the family.
The Decision Ami Brown Reportedly Resisted
The most surprising detail may be how the family's separation from Matt reportedly unfolded.
Sources told TMZ that patriarch Billy Brown ultimately concluded the family could no longer continue supporting Matt because of his alleged ongoing struggles.
However, Matt's mother, Ami Brown, reportedly resisted cutting off communication with her eldest son. According to the report, Matt's siblings eventually urged their mother to distance herself as well after years of watching him repeatedly spiral.
Family sources said the Browns ultimately viewed the separation as necessary for both their safety and the family's public image. That reported decision left Matt largely estranged from the family he once appeared alongside on one of Discovery's most recognizable reality shows.
Although Matt spent years estranged from much of his family, his death has brought renewed attention to the relationships that endured despite that distance. The loss marks a heartbreaking chapter for the Brown family.
