Donald Trump Pays Over $5.6 Million to Author Who Sued Him
President Donald Trump has officially paid a large sum of money to the writer who sued him, bringing a years-long legal fight to a close. But it was her public reaction — and one unexpected message — that quickly became the biggest talking point.
A years-long courtroom battle has finally reached a major turning point, but it was what happened after the money arrived that had people talking.
After multiple appeals, legal arguments, and one last effort to stop the payment, Donald Trump has officially transferred more than $5.6 million in damages to the woman who successfully sued him. Yet instead of the payment itself, her public response quickly stole the spotlight.

A Legal Fight That Stretched on for Years
According to the BBC, writer E. Jean Carroll has officially received more than $5.6 million after the funds were released from a court-controlled escrow account, where they had remained while Trump pursued multiple appeals.
The electronic wire transfer brings to a close the legal battle stemming from a 2023 civil trial, in which a unanimous nine-person Manhattan jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll in a luxury department store dressing room during the 1990s and for later defaming her after she publicly accused him.
Trump appealed the verdict through the courts, but the US Supreme Court ultimately declined to hear the case. Following a final dispute over whether the funds should remain frozen, Judge Lewis A. Kaplan ordered the funds released immediately.

The Case That Led to the $5 Million Award
The lawsuit that resulted in the $5 million verdict was actually the second of two separate legal actions Carroll brought against Trump.
As explained in NBC News, Carroll first sued Trump after he publicly denied her allegations in 2019, calling them a "hoax" and a "con job" after she alleged he sexually assaulted her in a Manhattan department store dressing room in the mid-1990s.
While that first defamation lawsuit was still moving through the courts, Carroll filed a second lawsuit after New York temporarily reopened expired civil claims for adult sexual assault survivors.
That opportunity existed because of New York's Adult Survivors Act. This 2022 law created a one-year window allowing adults to file civil lawsuits over alleged sexual offenses even if the normal statute of limitations had already expired.

The Verdict That Reshaped the Legal Battle
In May 2023, jurors rejected Carroll's claim that Trump raped her but found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation.
According to UNILAD, the jury awarded Carroll a total of $5 million in damages, including compensation for sexual abuse and defamation. That judgment eventually grew to approximately $5.62 million after interest accrued during the appeals process.
Carroll's Online Post Suddenly Became the Biggest Talking Point
Not long after the payment was confirmed, Carroll took to her Substack page with a celebratory message that immediately drew widespread attention. Her post opened simply:
"The Eagle Has Landed."
She then thanked her legal team one by one, writing, "Thank you, Robbie Kaplan. Brandon Trice! Tim Martin! Max Crema! Avita Anand! Gloria Labbad! Rebecca Baskin! Olivia Berci! and Thomas Llyod [sic]! Thank You, Mike Ferrara! Shawn G. Crowley! Joshua Matz! Matt Craig! Rachel Tuchman! Helen Andrews! Emma De Courcy!"
Then Came the Line That Few People Expected
The biggest surprise came at the end of Carroll's message. Instead of stopping after thanking her own attorneys, she took a sarcastic swipe at Trump's legal team by adding:
"And . . . a special, special thanks to Alina Habba Esq.! I could not have done it without you."
Her Legal Team Says the Fight Produced Accountability
Carroll's lead attorney, Roberta Kaplan, confirmed the payment in a statement, saying, "Three years ago, a unanimous nine-person jury found President Trump liable for sexually assaulting and defaming E. Jean Carroll."
She continued, "Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment the jury awarded her as a result of that verdict."
Trump's legal representatives, meanwhile, criticized the outcome, reportedly describing the payment as a "Democrat-funded travesty."

But Another Massive Case Is Still Waiting
Even though the $5.6 million payment has now been completed, the legal battles between Trump and Carroll are far from over.
NBC News previously reported that a federal appeals court upheld a separate $83 million defamation judgment against Donald Trump, rejecting arguments that presidential immunity should shield him from liability and concluding that the damages were reasonable given the circumstances of the case.
That judgment remains the subject of further legal proceedings, meaning this long-running dispute may not have reached its final chapter just yet.
