Tammy Slaton's Transformation Takes Center Stage as '1000-Lb. Sisters' Returns for Season 9 on TLC — Photos

The sisters will soon be back on our screens, but a fan-shared cast photo gave viewers another reason to examine one familiar face especially closely.

On July 20, 2026, TLC announced that "1000-Lb. Sisters" would return on September 1, with Tammy Slaton and Amy Slaton showing viewers where life has taken them since Season 8.

The trailer promised fractured trust, new goals, and plenty of family tension, yet Tammy's appearance left some fans far more concerned with what they thought they could see than what they heard.

TLC announced the premiere with its usual playful energy, writing, "Buckle up, the sisters are coming back! 👏 A new season of #1000lbSisters premieres Tuesday, September 1 on TLC."

Amy, 38, was finally free to share the news as well. In a lengthy Instagram post, she told followers that she had been waiting a long time for the secret to come out and thanked everyone who had supported the family through its highs and lows.

"WE’RE BACK! 💜" Amy wrote before describing the episodes as a new chapter in their lives. She added, "Mark your calendars and get those snacks (or sodies 😉) ready because it’s almost time!"

The cheerful announcement made the Slatons' return sound like a family reunion, but the trailer showed that Amy and Tammy, 39, still have some emotional distance to close. Their sisterly bond has carried the series for years, and this time, both women admitted it remained a work in progress.

"Me and Tammy are taking things slow. We’re still rebuilding trust," Amy says in the trailer.

Tammy is equally realistic about the situation, acknowledging that "it’s going to take time to get that bond back." Instead of waiting for everything between them to feel normal again, she appears determined to accept experiences she may once have avoided.

That includes going horseback riding and receiving a proposal from Andrea Dalton. For Tammy, who has spent much of the series fighting for greater independence, even a short glimpse of her trying something new carries a great deal of history.

Amy has her own plans, and she certainly is not introducing them quietly. She wants skin-removal surgery, hopes to learn how to drive, and announces, "This is Amy 2.0 [expletive]."

Her ambitions also extend into music. Amy begins turning her poetry into original songs with the help of AI-generated songwriting, although some relatives do not appear convinced that her new career idea will work.

Amy, however, makes it clear that she has little interest in criticism. "When I become rich and famous, don’t come crying to me," she warns. "Do not darken my doorstep."

That confidence gives the trailer some of its funniest energy, especially while Tammy is approaching her own changes more cautiously. The difference between them is familiar, but the damaged trust beneath their jokes gives Season 9 a more complicated starting point.

Even so, much of the immediate online discussion after the trailer dropped did not center on the proposal, Amy's music, or the sisters' relationship. After a fan account shared a cast picture on July 20, viewers fixed their attention on Tammy, who was positioned at the front of the group.

Some people believed she appeared heavier than in other recent images, and they did not hold back in the comments. On Instagram, one person wrote, "Tammy looks like she’s gaining weight!"

Another asked, "Did she put weight on?" A more enthusiastic viewer focused on the whole group and commented, "Looking so great ya’ll! I hope there is another season in the works! 💜 [sic]."

Others expressed their reactions much more bluntly. One person said, "Whoa, Tammy is blowing up again. How sad," while another wrote, "Tammy looks so much bigger what's going on ?? [sic]."

A separate commenter echoed, "I think Tammy looks like she is gaining again 😭." Another urged her to be careful, writing, "Tammy is getting bigger by the minute, girl take care of yourself 😢😢😢."

The conversation continued beneath another post, where one person commented, "Tammy looks like she picking up weight again [sic]."

Someone else claimed to have noticed changes in more than one family member, writing, "I've seen pics from their recent meet n greets. Amy looks great. Tammy and Chris both have gained alot of weight back 😢 [sic]."

Not every reaction involved concern or speculation. One supporter wrote, "I'm so proud of Tammy 👏❤️," while another cheered on both sisters with, "Lookin fab gals ❤️🙌🔥."

The comments show how intensely viewers continue to monitor Tammy's body, sometimes drawing conclusions from a single angle or one brief trailer appearance. Neither the cast photo nor the preview establishes that she has regained weight, and no confirmation from Tammy about such a change.

Her recent journey has also involved much more than a number on a scale. During Season 8, Tammy revealed that she had begun therapy after anxiety, mood changes, and family conflict kept her away from a trip to New Orleans.

In February 2026, a People preview showed Chris and Misty meeting with Tammy after returning from the vacation. She had declined to join them because being around her relatives had recently worsened her anxiety, although she had not initially explained that to the family.

Chris struggled to understand why Tammy did not even want to hear about the trip. He reminded her that New Orleans had once been somewhere she wanted to visit and said her lack of interest was a sign that something was wrong.

When Chris and Misty asked how she had spent her time instead, Tammy finally told them, "I'm going to the therapist."

The decision followed strain in her relationship with Andrea, who had threatened to leave because of Tammy's outbursts and the pressure they created. Tammy also visited her doctors, and their findings offered an important explanation for what she had been experiencing.

According to Tammy, some of her prescriptions had remained at doses intended for her former body size. Following her substantial weight loss, those amounts were no longer appropriate for her smaller body.

"It just kind of put me in, I guess, a manic depression state and it was making me have a mental breakdown," Tammy explained. She said doctors removed five medications that she no longer needed and reduced the doses of the others.

That disclosure placed her emotional struggles in a different light. Her decision to seek therapy and medical care also showed that the transformation viewers have followed is not limited to her outward appearance.
