Woman rescues puppy after spotting moving trash bag on the side of the road
She didn’t know what it was but decided to follow her gut and check out what was inside the bag. As it turns out, it was a back puppy.
Malissa Sergent Lewis decided to take another route as she was late for work in August 2016. The shortcut was a quiet back road. While driving, she ran into a trash bag in the middle of the road.
In an interview with The Dodo, Lewis recalled how she saw the bag move. She knew something was alive in that bag and decided to check it out.
Lewis took a video of the whole incident and it showed her getting closer to the plastic bag which was tied off in a knot.
She slowly tore a hole in the corner and took a peek inside.
“It was a puppy. And he sure was glad to see me. As soon as I opened it up, and he saw light, he just started wagging his tail. He knew he was OK. I couldn’t believe it,” Lewis recalled.
Although the puppy had a collar, there was no tag. Lewis had no clue who the owner was and decided to take the animal along with her to her workplace.
Soon after, she called her son to pick the puppy up and her son took the dog home.
They decided to name the dog Hefty and brought him to the vet where they learned he was perfectly healthy.
Lewis’ family adopted Hefty and got him his shots. It wasn’t long until it became clear that Hefty was very happy to have found a new home and a new family.
“We all love the puppy. He’s going to be loved, and have a good home with us. I’m just glad I was in the right place at the right time to save him. That’s what it was,” shared Lewis.
