With her husband Sidney in tow for the interview, the actress recalled a very painful part of her childhood. She started off by clarifying that while people have always thought she was from Baltimore, MD, she was actually from Baltimore County, Maryland. She claimed that she lived a very different life from the children around her, especially due to the abuse she suffered at the hands of her brother.

The "Queens of Comedy" actress recalls suffering his abuses from ages 7 to 11. As she clarified why she never spoke up about it, she reminds the interviewer that she was just an innocent child trying to wrap her head around being abused by her own brother. She was terrified.

As she also spoke about this topic previously, Oprah was able to speak to her brother Imes directly in her show.

"I’m here today to first acknowledge what I’ve been in denial for 37 years, and that is I did assault and inappropriately touch my sister in manners that were uncomfortable for her. And for that, I apologize and I'm humbly sorry that those actions had taken place. The hardest part to me was for even to admit to her that I did something wrong. I downplayed it by saying 'if you think I did something wrong, then I'm sorry.'. I did it, I'm not proud of it."

Gerard Imes claimed that it was his drug and alcohol intake that fueled the sexual abuse he committed.

"I started using cocaine, heroine, [and] alcohol at the age of 11. I used these drugs to hide my own pain, to hide my own fears... the drugs allowed me and afforded me the opportunity to hurt my sister."

Mo'Nique Imes, 50, is the youngest of four children. She has two brothers, Gerald, and Steve, and a sister, Millicent. In her older years, she was married to Mark Jackson from 1997 to 2001, and later on married Sidney Hicks in 2006. She has four children, two from each marriage.
