The Tony Award red carpet Sunday was special for Condola Rashad for this main reason: her show, Saint Joan, had just closed. The actress, who likened the day to the last day of school mixed with prom and graduation at the same time, admitted that it was an emotional one but still, “It’s a celebration.”

Rashad, daughter to Phylicia Rashad and sportscaster Ahmad Rashad earned the best actress in a play nomination for playing Joan of Arc in the play by George Bernard Shaw. She brought her sisters and dad to celebrate her success and said: “it’s been a really great opportunity for us to come together.”

This is not the first time Rashad’s work is being recognized. She earned a 2012 Tony nomination for “Stick Fly.” She has also been doing well in “Billions” where she plays district attorney.

When talking to Deadline about her role in Broadway’s Saint Joan, the actress said she did thorough research on the character to play the way she did.

“I researched Joan as if I were writing a thesis on her. Shaw wrote Saint Joan as a fiction, but for me as an actor I thought, What an opportunity to be playing a person who actually existed, so why not actually research the person? What I learned was nothing less than heartbreaking. Incredibly moving, incredibly inspiring. The actual story is not something that most people know. Like, she wasn’t actually burned at the stake for witchcraft. They couldn’t try her on that because they didn’t have enough evidence. What they burned her for was wearing men’s clothing.”

While Rashad waits for the fourth season of Billions to start filming in the fall, she is taking a well-earned break. “I’m taking my summer. I’m going to be out in the world.”
