30 years after the original film was released the long-awaited sequel has begun filming with Tom Cruise returning in the main role, and now there are reports that Val Kilmer will also join the production.

According to The Wrap, ‘an individual with knowledge of the production’ revealed that 58-year-old Val Kilmer will, in fact, reprise his role of Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky, Cruise’s chief rival in the 1986 film by late director Tony Scott.

Fans of the film have been wondering if Kilmer was going to come back for Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel that will be released on 2019, and even the actor has hinted about this before.

In the upcoming sequel, Cruise will star once again as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, now a mentor to a new generation of U.S. Navy fighter pilots. No more details of the plot have been revealed yet.

The original movie, also starred by Anthony Edwards and Kelly McGillis, followed the adventures of a flight academy and its students. The film became a huge commercial hit when it was released.

The film also cemented Tom Cruise’s reputation as one of Hollywood’s biggest star, and it opened the doors for many great roles in his 20’s. It also grew a great cult following, and the fans have been waiting for decades for a sequel.

Kilmer has been spotted near the San Diego hotel that has been used by the studio since production began. Nevertheless, The Wrap couldn’t get Paramount to confirm Kilmer’s return for his role as ‘Iceman’.

Back in 2015, Kilmer fueled the rumors that he was going to return for the sequel when the actor prematurely shared that he was in conversations with the production to reprise his role.

He had to update his post when fans started to get excited about it, admitting he had rushed things when he said he was going to be in the continuation to the 80’s classic, but it seems it finally became a reality.

‘Being offered a role is very different from doing a role. I jumped the gun with my post. I jumped the topgun… An innocent mistake. It was just such a wonderful phone call with my agent…’ wrote Kilmer then.

Top Gun: Maverick will premiere in July 2019, with Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy, Oblivion) as director and screenplay by Eric Warren Singer, Peter Craig, and Justin Marks. Read more on our Twitter account @amomama_usa
