Monica shows her love for 'sister in music' Brandy during recent performance
For nearly two decades, contemporary singers Monica and Brandy haven’t been seeing eye to eye, or so it seemed. However, that changed lately when Monica paid tribute to her “sister in music” during her recent concert.
Amid reports of their long-standing feud, Monica surprised fans of her show when she took a moment to give a shout out to Brandy along with the late singer Aliyah.
“I want to thank my sisters in music. They started out the same time as I did. How many of y’all love the late, great Aaliyah. She was just special, one in a million for sure.”
Then she encouraged her fans to applaud Brandy.
“I want y’all to make some noise for the woman – this is the only Grammy I ever won in my whole life, the only time they called a little black girl from the country to the big stage – was with this amazing person, Ms. Brandy Norwood.”
Uplifting women with her show of sisterhood, Monica added,
“See, the thing is if we lift each other up, we can do a whole lot. I’m going to do this for my sisters tonight, the one that’s absent and the one traveling around the world doing her thing.”
At that, she dedicated the 1997 ‘Space Jam’ single ‘For You I Will’ to Brandy and Aliyah.
Her tribute follows an alleged shade Brandy pulled on her during her recent show at the Essence Festival three weeks ago. The sister of Ray-J performed an a capella rendition of ‘The Boy is Mine’, the song she recorded with Monica. But instead of singing the lyrics “the boy is mine,” she changed it to “the song is mine,” seemingly taking a jab at Monica.
The singers’ alleged feud had been ongoing for decades now with Brandy often expressing her distaste for Monica publicly. Meanwhile, Monica opted to stay mum about it through the years and just took the high road recently, burying whatever differences they had.
