Burt Reynolds confessed that he is still in love with his co-star, and former ex-girlfriend Sally Field, who he believes to be the 'one who got away.'

The two were together for five years, but the legendary actor claims that he has loved her since he met her when she was only seven years old.

During an interview with Hoda Kotb for Today, Reynolds reminisced about the times they spent together and how much he fought for her to be cast on Smokey and the Bandit.

With a life full of adventures, amazing roles and of acquaintances, Kotb couldn't help but ask the 82-year-old actor who the love of his life was and he didn't dodge the question.

With his usual sense of humor, Reynolds said that that he would be 'dead in the water' despite his answer, so he went to reveal that Field was the woman who stole his heart.

THEIR FIRST JOB TOGETHER

Reynolds and Field starred together on-screen for the very first time in Smokey and the Bandit, in 1977. Initially, Field was not supposed to be in the movie, but Reynolds managed to convince the filmmakers to choose her.

They thought that she wasn't attractive enough, but the actor told them that her talent was truly attractive and that that matter even more than her physical appearance.

The duo had an incredible chemistry on and off the screen, which led them to work together in the sequel, Smokey and the Bandit II, in 1980, as well as in Hooper and The End, two years before that.

WHY DIDN'T THEY GET MARRIED?

Despite being together for five years, Field believed that Reynolds wasn't ready for a commitment as serious as marriage, which was why she turned so many of his proposals down.

Nowadays, the two are no longer close and haven't spoken to each other for several years. Still, Reynolds holds Field, who is currently 71 years old, in his heart.

Although he is no longer the man that he used to be, he has one of the most prestigious careers in Hollywood and can say that he was once the most sought-after movie star of his time.
