Tracy Chapman sues Nicki Minaj for copyright infringement
Nicki Minaj will have to defend herself in a lawsuit filed by Tracy Chapman who accused her of copyright infringement. Minaj reportedly released a song sampling Chapman's hit without the latter's permission.
A lawsuit has been filed by Tracy Chapman against Nicki Minaj for copyright infringement. According to the Blast, Chapman is accusing Minaj of sampling her song “Baby Can I Hold You” without her permission.
In June, Minaj reportedly asked for Chapman’s clearance to use the song as the basis for her new track “Sorry” in her yet unreleased album, “Queen.” Chapman denied her request. Minaj’s camp attempted to change the resisting singer’s mind by telling her she “was inspired” by the “Fast Car” hitmaker. They repeatedly tried to have a sit down with Chapman who rejected their offers. Minaj reportedly pulled out her song from the album after.
However, in August, Chapman was surprised to learn that “Sorry” was aired by Funkmaster Flex on Hot 97 as a teaser. It was immediately picked up by fans who circulated it online. It was also featured on “The Breakfast Club.”
Minaj tweeted “Sis said no” soon after Flex aired the song but the damage had already been done. Chapman, who claims half of the lyrics and melody of her 1988 song is featured in "Sorry" is now taking legal action.
CHAPMAN VS. MINAJ
In her lawsuit, the singer confirmed Minaj’s team reached out to her several times but she turned them down. She blames Minaj for leaking the song to Flex. She’s now suing for damages and prohibiting Minaj from releasing the song again.
CARDI VS. MINAJ
Chapman is the latest in a string of enemies Minaj appears to have made recently. Last month, Cardi B threw her shoe at the “Starships” singer during a Harper’s Bazaar ICONS party. The new mom was reportedly upset with Minaj over lies she allegedly spread about her and her child.
JENNER VS. MINAJ
Minaj also seemed to have irked Kylie Jenner who purposely avoided a run-in with her at the red carpet of the Video Music Awards in August. Minaj previously bashed Jenner’s baby daddy, Travis Scott whose album, “Astroworld” beat her “Queen” to Billboard 200’s number one spot.
At the event, Jenner was caught on video stopping in her tracks after she spotted Minaj from a distance. The reality star took a detour and skipped the red carpet. Minaj denied having any issues with Scott but that didn’t seem to keep Kylie from holding a grudge on her.
