Most of us are focused on chasing security and contentment. Most of the time, we think that those two things can be attained by getting the best job, fulfilling our goals, or building the perfect reputation.

Because we are so focused on reaching the finish line, we often take the journey for granted. We often forget to pause and appreciate how far we’ve come.

We also forget the more important things in life, which is being happy and loving your friends and family unconditionally.

Bored Daddy shared a touching letter written by an elderly woman sent to her friend, Bertha.

The woman talks about her realizations in life on the letter, as well as how she had been applying those realizations to her life.

She started by saying that she has been more appreciative of the smaller things, such as admiring the view of her garden.

The woman wrote that she had been working less and had been spending more time with her friends and family.

“Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experiences to savor, not to endure. I’m trying to recognize these moments now and cherish them,” she went on.

The words “someday” and “one of these days” had been removed from her vocabulary, according to the woman. She said she learned to be in the moment and instantly do the things she sets her mind to.

At some point, she expressed her troubles about the people who take living for granted. She thought that perhaps people would choose to spend more time with their friends and family if they were to realize that tomorrow might never come for others. She added that maybe people would be more forgiving of their enemies if they realized how precious time truly is.

“It’s those little things left undone that would make me angry if I knew my hours were limited. Angry because I hadn’t written certain letters that I intended to write one of these days. Angry and sorry, that I didn’t tell my husband and parents often enough how much I truly love them,” she wrote.

By the end of her letter, the woman said that she wakes up every day and thinks that each day is special and every breath is a “gift.”

Of all the things the woman penned, the last line struck most. She wrote, “Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance.”

This letter may be real, or it may be fiction. But one thing is certain, the lesson it tries to pass on is valuable. One must not take living for granted. Life should be enjoyed, and everyone should live theirs to the fullest while there’s still time.
