The actress and the singer dated for three years before separating in 2014, only to rekindle their relationship in May 2017.

The 56-year-old took to her Instagram account to share the news with her fans and followers and did so by using a cartoon drawing of the couple.

A SWEET DOODLE

The excited soon-to-be bride added the word 'engaged' as a caption, and the cartoon figures' seem to be reaching for each other's arms while a small ring can be seen between their hands.

The little cartoon depiction of Mellencamp even has a guitar on his left hand, but although Ryan was the one who shared the drawing, it isn't certain whether she was also its author.

PUTTING A RING ON IT

The news was announced after she was spotted out and about in New York City on Wednesday when she was photographed wearing an engagement ring on her way to a salon.

After their split in 2014, the couple was first seen together again in the spring of 2017 and then on a date at the Art Cliff Diner in Martha's Vineyard, in Massachusetts.

FAMILY NIGHT OUT

Recently, they were photographed at a New York Knicks basketball match accompanied by their two sons, 25-year-old Jack and 23-year-old Hud, both from past relationships.

The four seemed to have had a great time and the step-brothers even showed up to the game wearing festive ensembles - Hud sported a green shirt that resembled an elf's uniform while Jack chose a Christmas sweater with reindeer on it.

DENNIS QUAID

Ryan used to be married to Dennis Quaid and they were together for 10 years. Back in July, Quaid revealed that being with Ryan made him feel insignificant because she was more famous than him.

He was no longer in the spotlight like he used to and his career came to a halt. According to Quaid, that was a 'growth opportunity' and a hard lesson that he learned.
