A college student was at her local grocery store and shared the story of how another customer disrespected a bagger all because he was mentally challenged.

The student was at the checkout, and the bagger was carefully placing her purchased items in the bag.

The bagger asked the student, “You want this one?” as he held up a canvas bag. She noticed that it had a hole it, and asked him to use another one before saying “thank you.”

Suddenly, the woman behind her, exasperatingly said, “God! Hurry it up!”

The student was quick to defend the bagger, calmly saying that he was about to finish bagging.

Then the rude woman said, “Oh, so you’re slow like him too? God all you special people need to stop interfering with normal people.”

It was evident on the bagger’s face that he was offended by the insensitive remark, but he managed to say, “Ma’am, she’s not not-smart. She goes to University. She’s real smart,” as he pointed on the university logo on the student’s sweatpants.

The student returned the praise and exclaimed, “And he’s the best bagger here! He’s very careful, ma’am, which is a good thing with groceries.”

After the bagger was done, he carefully gave the bags to the student.

Everything was going fine, but the rude woman decided to make another mean remark.

“God, he won’t even help you take them to your car? What a delinquent. I want to see a manager about this!” she yelled.

Remaining calm, the student, who was a regular at the store, said, “I walk, lady. You want to call a manager over something I have intentionally asked him to do many times?”

The bagger beamed at the student and said, “Have a nice day!”

Under her breath, the rude woman said, “Retard.”

It was after that last comment that the cashier, who had been silent the entire time, decided to speak up.

“Refusal of service for massive discrimination towards a valued employee, as well as a regular customer. You may leave your items here; we’ll shelve them later. Please leave,” she said in her calm tone.

The woman’s reaction was intense. She threw a fit and eventually broke a shelf. Guards had to come in and physically restrain her as the bagger led the student and another customer away to safety. Police officers were also called in.

When the tension died down, the bagger asked the student, “Still coming next week?”

The student smiled and said, “Yep.”
