Barack Obama created an intentional quarrel between him and Michelle before proposing

In movies, marriage proposals are usually elaborate and romantic events where the couple gaze at each other affectionately. However, this was not the case for former US president Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama.

Before they were dating, Barack and Michelle were lawyers. She was his mentor while he was completing an internship after graduation.

In a recent interview with Stephen Colbert, she revealed that he proposed to her during a dinner to celebrate him passing the bar exam.

Before this dinner, they had discussed the concept of marriage and this often turned into a debate between the two young lawyers, because Barack always argued against it. During the dinner in question, they had a similar discussion, which they were still having when the dessert arrived.

But instead of a slice of cake or portion of pudding, their waiter handed Michelle a box with an engagement ring inside. Barack sarcastically remarked that the engagement ring should stop her from arguing with him.

The story of their proposal is one of the many anecdotes which are recounted in Michelle’s new memoir, “Becoming.” It has been added to Oprah’s Book Club List and was an instant bestseller.

Michelle’s autobiography is the number one bestseller in various countries including Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Denmark. It has sold more copies than any biography of a First Lady of the USA ever has.

In the book, Michelle Obama covers some different subjects; such as how her fertility issues, her marriage to Barack, living in the White House and raising children.

BOOK TOUR SURPRISE

As part of the marketing for her biography, Michelle has embarked on a book tour. During her travels, she had started to miss her family and husband.

Barack surprised her by showing up to a book tour event in Washington DC with a bunch of roses. This romantic gesture was applauded by the crowd and received a heartwarming response from Michelle.

When asked about the random act, Barack jokingly said:

“This is like when JAY-Z comes out during a Beyoncé concert."
