3-year-old boy who survived 2 nights in the woods says that a friendly bear kept him safe
A 3-year-old boy who spent two days lost in a forest in North Carolina, survived thanks to a 'friendly bear' who protected him.
The 3-year-old Casey Lynn Hathaway had been playing with two other children before he disappeared on Tuesday last week when he was at his great-grandmother's house in the town of Ernul, North Carolina.
When his family noticed that the child was not in the house with the other children, they went looking for him without much success. The next day 600 volunteers joined to find the little one.
"He was walking by the woods in the back of the house and now we can’t find him," said the great-grandmother when she called 911, while the rest of the family searched for him everywhere. "The other ones come through the house but left him there and he walked off somewhere and we can't find him."
The search worked after 48 hours when EMS Captain Shane Grier found the child entangled in some bushes. When asked what happened the child said that it is fine thanks to his new best friend, a friendly bear.
We may never know what Casey Hathaway was doing during the three days he was missing. https://t.co/i1qLMKEkzQ— WKBT News 8 (@news8news) January 29, 2019
After spending two days outdoors, without food or water and exposed to low temperatures, the child was found entangled in thorny bushes, about 35-45 meters inland forest and about 800 meters from the place where he had been lost.
“You could tell he was very cold so we immediately started warming him up once we got him to the vehicle,” Grier said. “The more we warmed him up, it seemed the better he got.”
When asked about what happened, the child told his relatives that "his best friend, the bear, stayed with him to keep him safe ", according to his grandmother.
The authorities interviewed the child and the story he told was exactly what he told his relatives, so the members of the police maintain that the little boy is telling the truth and they still do not understand how he could have survived, especially when a bear found him.

In a similar story, another child was found alive after being missing for 18 hours on the woods. This time it was a 2-year-old girl who got lost near her home in Savannah, Georgia.
It was a group of Savannah police recruits — Robert Parker, Ernest Mobley and Luis Esquina — who discovered the little girl just before 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23, Johnson says.
There is also the story of the 13-year-old girl who was found alive, three months after her parents were killed and she was reported missing.
On October 15, Jayme Closs disappeared from her home in Barron, Wisconsin, 90 miles east of Minneapolis. At the same house, her parents, James and Denise Closs were found dead from a gunshot after an unidentified caller dialed 911.
