UGA Fraternity Suspended after Video Mocking Slavery and Using Racial Slur Went Viral

A University of Georgia fraternity has been suspended after a video showing some of its members mocking slavery and using racial slurs went viral.

The University of Georgia's Xi-Lambda chapter of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity has been suspended after a video showing some of its members mocking slavery and using racial slurs went viral on social media.

This is the second fraternity to be suspended at UGA in the last three months.

“We have been notified that the chapter is currently suspended, and we can confirm that there’s an investigation underway regarding the students involved in the video.”

SHOCKING VIDEO MOCKS SLAVERY

The video that sparked the suspension showed 4 of the fraternity members, one of whom was wielding a belt as a whip and extolling another student to "pick my cotton, bitch!"

A student off camera tells him he is using the "wrong word", and the man then corrects himself, exclaiming:

"Pick my cotton, n___r!"

Fraternities have been implicated in incidents of racial discrimination and sexual abuse in campuses across the U.S

UGA EXPELLS FOUR STUDENTS

After social media users identified the four men in the video, they were suspended from the University and expelled by Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. The students may face expulsion from the University for conduct unbecoming an alumnus.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION TO INVESTIGATE

UGA’s Student Government Association announced to the student body that it was aware of the video and was investigating the students involved:

“We have been notified that the chapter is currently suspended, and we can confirm that there’s an investigation underway regarding the students involved in the video.”

FRATERNITIES UNDER FIRE FOR RACISM

It is not the first time that fraternities, largely populated by white, affluent members of the student body, have been involved in controversial behavior.

Fraternities have been implicated in incidents of racial discrimination and sexual abuse in campuses across the U.S., and often investigated for hazing and sadistic initiation rites.

Tau Kappa suspension obliges the fraternity to cease all activities, including social and candidate events on campus until it is reinstated.

SLAVERY USED TO TEACH RACISM IN NEW YORK SCHOOL

Fraternity students are not the only ones using the horrors of slavery to express their racist views.

Rebecca Antinozzi, a teacher from in an exclusive New York private school acted as an auctioneer in a mock slave auction in a social studies class.

Antinozzi had three black students don imaginary chains and prompted the white students to bid on them, supposedly to exemplify how slaves were trafficked in the US. Antinozzi has been suspended and is being investigated for racism and inappropriate conduct.
