Tamela Mann Once Revealed How Being Overweight Almost Disrupted Her Career as a Gospel Singer
Tamela Mann has undoubtedly made a mark in Hollywood and the music industry, but her achievements almost did not become a reality, no thanks to her former weight. She once opened up about the issue.
Most people began to notice Tamela when she appeared in several Tyler Perry movies, often alongside her husband, David Mann, but the gospel singer has been doing her thing as far back as the ‘90s.
In a 2016 Twitter chat, Tamela, who has one of the most captivating voices of all time, revealed that her talent was not enough to give her the big break she wanted.
After someone asked: "What are some of the struggles you faced when entering the gospel music genre?" the Grammy winner responded:
“One of the main struggles is my weight! I've always been good enough to be heard but not seen.”
Tamela, 52, would later embark on a weight loss journey; she announced the result during a 2014 appearance on "Tom Joyner Morning Show" as reported by CP.
'It would be great to be an encouragement to somebody else and not just to help myself get over this journey.'
"I've lost over 100 pounds,” the singer and actress said. “I used to be a 30/32, and now I'm at an 18/20.”
Tamela’s resolve to lose weight was likely strengthened by her husband’s Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis in 2007. David’s condition meant he had to adopt a healthy lifestyle which includes his diet, but Tamela must have realized prevention is the best cure.
"For me, I just have to get my mind right, set mind and body,” she told Diabetes Forecast in 2014. “I don't have issues with diabetes or hypertension, but I don't want it to happen.”
The lovebirds, who star in their own reality series, have now taken to helping each other on their healthy living journey. They even appear to have influenced their daughter, Tia, who has been flaunting slimmer curves on social media.
Still, in line with her goal, Tamela signed on as the new celebrity ambassador for WW (the new Weight Watchers), a brand that “aims to make wellness accessible to all by helping millions of people adopt healthy habits for real life.”
Speaking to ESSENCE about her decision, the “Meet The Browns” star said:
“It would be great to be an encouragement to somebody else and not just to help myself get over this journey I’ve been struggling with my whole life. …I’m really excited about the lifestyle change.”
Tamela and David, 52, have been married for over 30 years and have two children together, David Jr and Tia. The couple also raised Porcia and Tiffany, David’s daughters from a previous relationship, and Sonya, Tamela’s niece.
