Marie Osmond Opened up about the Tragic Death of Her Son, Who Took His Life at Age 18
Music icon Marie Osmond spoke about how she copes with the tragic death of her child, who committed suicide at age 18.
Osmond’s life became emptier in 2010 when she lost her son Michael. In an interview with Closer Weekly, the 59-year-old singer said, “You keep living."
Many people criticized Osmond for coming back to work a few weeks after Michael’s passing. However, she clarified that she wasn’t going to let the rest of her family die along with him.
"I thought I knew what sorrow was but you don’t ever know until you’ve been through it,” she added.
“There’s no joy in sorrow like it says in the Scriptures, but I’ve come to the conclusion that the joy they’re talking about is looking at somebody else who’s been through what I’ve been through and saying, ‘I understand.’"
Osmond continued that "there’s joy in loving other people and saying you know how they feel and that they’re going to get through this, too.”
The "Read My Lips" singer is also a mother to seven other children - Stephen, Jessica, Rachael, Brandon, Brianna, Matthew, and Abigail.
Osmond, who gained success as a solo country music artist in the 1970s and 1980s, called her children the "greatest gift from God."
"Most child celebrities don’t make the transition to adulthood very well, but I believe the reason I made it is because I had eight kids to raise,” she added.
“I couldn’t stay a child! Children teach you to think about someone other than yourself. They teach you about unconditional love.”
