Gayle King 'Can't Wait' to Be a Grandma but Daughter Kirby Wants a Wedding First
Gayle King can’t hide the fact that she’s eager to become a grandmother, but she says her recently-engaged daughter, Kirby Bumpus, has other plans.
The “CBS This Morning” anchor happily announced her daughter’s engagement in February and now, she’s confessing how she “can’t wait” to become a grandma.
During a recent interview with People Magazine, King, 64, was asked if she’s ready to welcome some grandchildren and her response said it all.
"I’m trying to get names that could go with either males or females. ‘What about Remington?’ She goes, ‘Mom, my womb is empty.’"
“Yes! You don’t even have to finish the sentence. Yes! Dear Jesus, yes. I can’t wait,” the seasoned journalist gushed.
While King is over the moon and even making grandbaby plans, Kirby is not so keen.
“Kirby doesn’t want to hear it, as she said to me the other day. I said, ‘Kirby, I thought of another great baby name. Do you like the name Chandler? What about Eden?’ I’m trying to get names that could go with either males or females. ‘What about Remington?’ She goes, ‘Mom, my womb is empty and I would just like to plan the wedding.’”
“I said [to Kirby], ‘Give me a freakin’ date so I can start working on this!'” King added. Kirby is the daughter of King and her ex-husband William Bumpus.
In February, the “Oprah Magazine” editor-at-large announced Kirby's engagement to her fiancé, Virgil Miller on Instagram. The excited mom also shared several family shots, including a video of her and son, Will, surprising Kirby after the proposal.
“Guess what happened to @fav daughter,” King captioned the post. “[Kirby Bumpus] is ENGAGED! Swipe left to see the (very) lucky guy. Welcome to the family VIRGIL MILLER! She thought will and I were in la.”
Kirby also took to her Instagram page to share a photo with her fiancé, writing “Here. WE. Go!”
Meanwhile, when King eventually gets to become a grandma, we can’t help to wonder what she’ll like to be called. Considering her and best friend Oprah Winfrey recently expressed their dislike for the title “Auntie,” King may try to switch things up a little.
For Winfrey, who is godmother to Kirby and Will, things may not be as complicated.
King and Winfrey, who have been best friends for many years, revealed that they’d prefer not to be called “Auntie,” with the former claiming that she “hates” it.
“That’s what you say to old people or the old lady who lives in the neighborhood!" King continued. “I get that it’s a sign of respect, but no one's calling Beyoncé 'Auntie Beyoncé!'”
For Winfrey, who is godmother to Kirby and Will, things may not be as complicated. While the media mogul also hates being called “Auntie,” she doesn't mind when it's coming from her “nieces or godchildren.”
