David Oyelowo of 'Selma' Shares Romantic Story about Falling in Love with His Wife at Age 19
David Oyelowo is starring in a complex thriller based on a dysfunctional family's dynamics, but his personal life couldn't be more different.
We all know that life just isn't like the movies. No-one falls in love at first sight as a teen and decide that's the woman he's going to marry, right?
Wrong. Award-winning actor David Oyelowo has opened up about his personal love story and it's as sweet as any romantic movie you've ever sighed over.
EARLY MARRIAGE WASN'T IN DAVID OYELOWO'S PLANS
David's father had married at 40, so he expected to follow in his footsteps, but he didn't count on falling in love at 19.
He met 17-year-old Jessica at drama school. and he knew she was the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.
FINDING HIS FOREVER PERSON
Once he realized that he was deeply in love, David was faced with two choices: run from his feelings, or embrace the love he felt for Jessica. He stayed, and in 1998 the two were married. David was 22, and Jessica was 20.
"The moment I realized I was in love and couldn’t do without the lady I’m now married to, was when I literally couldn’t picture my life without her in it. And that was the moment beyond which I thought, ‘Okay, I guess this is my forever person.’" he said.
UNITED BY LOVE AND FAITH
It wasn't all smooth sailing for the interracial couple. David's father expressed doubts about the longevity of the relationship due to the racial differences, but the couple is united not just by love, but by an unshakeable Christian faith. David jokes that his father now prefers Jessica to his own son...
GUIDED BY FAITH
Jessica and David have now been married for 21 and share 4 beautiful children together.
David attributes the stability and happiness of his marriage to their unconditional love for each other and to God's blessing.
“I’m a Christian and that has been a bedrock for me since I was 16. And it’s been such a relief and a release to know that I am loved by God. That my salvation is secure in Christ and that in this life–I don’t have to strive because I already have the greatest reward anyone could ever have: which is God’s love,” he said.
Bless you, David and Jessica, for showing us all that love knows no barriers, of color, creed or culture.
