The death of Diahann Carroll last week brought on a wave of grief coursing through the industry where she thrived as an icon not just an actress but a trailblazer for African American entertainers.

Among those who strongly felt her loss was Patti LaBelle who took to her Instagram to pay tribute to her co-star in “A Different World.” She journeyed down memory lane to relive a moment in their show.

“Rest in power my friend!” the 75-year-old singer wrote to caption a black and white photo featuring her and Diahann in character on their 90’s series.

At 84, Diahann died after a long battle with breast cancer, a disease she became an advocate of after first acquiring it in 1993. “It’s my responsibility to help,” the actress told Oprah.

LEGENDS IN THEIR OWN RIGHT

Diahann played the mother of Whitney Gilbert (played by Jasmine Guy) who often battled with Patti’s character, the mother of Dwayne Wayne (played by Kadeem Hardison).

Diahann and Patti would later chart their own paths to success, making them each a legend in her own right. In fact, in 2005, they were among the elite guests of Oprah Winfrey’s Legend’s Ball which gathered a league of extraordinary Black women to honor them in one beautiful luncheon.

"Working with you was one of the high points of life in A Different World."

Shortly after Diahann's death, Oprah tweeted:

"Thanks for helping clear the path for me and so many others. I was honored to salute you as a Legend then, now and Forever."

DIAHANN'S BATTLE WITH BREAST CANCER

At 84, Diahann died after a long battle with breast cancer, a disease she became an advocate of after first acquiring it in 1993. “It’s my responsibility to help,” the actress told Oprah after realizing that keeping her diagnosis a secret (which she did for a time) was just being arrogant in her part.

“There’s millions of women that have to deal with this every day. We have to work together,” she explained.

Her decision to come out and share her experience proved to be an incredible journey for the Tony Award-winning entertainer who managed to touch lives by interacting with groups of women and educating them about breast cancer.

JASMINE PAYS TRIBUTE

In the wake of her death, one of her other co-stars on “A Different World” recognized what a truly inspiring woman Diahann was. Like Patti, Jasmine paid tribute to her on-screen mother sharing a photo of them from their days on the show.

“To the great Diahann Carroll, thank you for your grace, your beauty, and your love. Working with you was one of the high points of life in A Different World. We will miss you dearly.”

With the rest of the world, we too will miss you Miss Carroll.
